Bogan Shire Council
A western NSW shire of about 2,400 people spread over 14,600 km², centred on Nyngan — the shire's seat, sitting on the Bogan River at the junction of the Mitchell and Barrier Highways, and the town rebuilt behind a higher levee after the April 1990 flood. The economy runs on sheep, cattle and large-scale cropping, with copper mining a distinct rating category. Development application on exhibition: 92 self-storage units, 64 Hospital Road, Nyngan
Council gave notice that a development application has been submitted for ninety-two (92) new self-storage units at Lot 3 D.P. 1318030, 64 Hospital Road, Nyngan. The exhibition period commenced Thursday 13 August 2026 and closes at 4:00pm on Friday 28 August 2026.
What this means for you: Plans and application documents can be viewed at the council's Development and Environmental Office, 81 Cobar Street, Nyngan, between 8:30am and 4:00pm Monday to Friday. Written submissions must reach the General Manager, Bogan Shire Council, PO Box 221, Nyngan NSW 2825 by 4:00pm on 28 August 2026; if a submission is an objection, the grounds must be specified.

Culvert replacement work on the Mitchell Highway east of Nyngan
In its Council Column of 9 July 2026, council advised it would be carrying out construction work to replace culverts on the Mitchell Highway between Nyngan and the saleyards — starting about 500 metres from the Barrier Highway turn-off and continuing for the next 5 km towards Girilambone. Council said the work would take approximately 10 weeks with traffic lights in operation.
What this means for you: If you drive the Mitchell Highway east out of Nyngan, expect short delays and single-lane traffic control on that 5 km stretch. Council publishes road condition reports and road closures on its website, and live traffic information is on the NSW Live Traffic site.

Council adopts the 2026/2027 Operational Plan and Budget
Bogan Shire Council adopted its Operational Plan and Budget for 2026/2027 on 26 June 2026. General rates rise by 3.4%, the full IPART rate peg, spread evenly across all rating categories; waste and recycling charges, water access and usage charges and sewer charges each rise by 3.4%. The plan sets the overdue-rates interest rate at 9.5% for the year.
What this means for you: For a Nyngan household this means a residential minimum rate of $333, a domestic waste collection charge of $394, a kerbside recycling charge of $156 and a waste depot charge of $374, plus about $23 more on a standard 20mm water service and about $16 more on a standard residential sewer connection.
