Junee Shire Council
A Riverina railway shire on the Main South line, 41 km north of Wagga Wagga — around 6,500 people across 2,030 km², in Junee township and the villages of Old Junee, Illabo, Bethungra, Wantabadgery and Eurongilly. Home to the Junee Roundhouse Railway Museum, the licorice and chocolate factory in the old flour mill, and Bethungra's rail spiral, with an economy built on public administration and safety, farming, freight and manufacturing. 2026/27 Annual Grants Program open for applications
Council's Annual Grants Program for 2026/27 opened in July 2026, with applications accepted between 1 July and 30 August 2026. The program funds community groups and volunteers to deliver projects, activities and events, and funded activities must support a strategy or action in the Community Strategic Plan, Delivery Program or another adopted plan.
What this means for you: If you are involved in a community group, sporting club or volunteer organisation in the shire, this is the annual window to apply. The application form and program guidelines are on the council's page.

Alcohol-free zones and alcohol-prohibited areas proposed for 2026–2030
Council placed on public exhibition a proposal to re-declare Alcohol-Free Zones on Junee's main streets and Alcohol Prohibited Areas in named parks and reserves for the period 18 August 2026 to 17 August 2030, replacing the existing zones which expire on 17 August 2026. The proposed zones cover Main Street, Humphrys, Peel, Cox, Waratah, Lorne, Hill, Seignior, Crawley, Junction and Dobbyns Streets, Broadway and Railway Square, with time-limited exclusions for licensed premises verandahs; prohibited areas include the skate park, Hobbin, Endeavour, Memorial, Dobbyns and Adventure Parks.
What this means for you: Council invited representations or objections within 30 days of publication, addressed to the General Manager at PO Box 93, Junee NSW 2663, lodged through the council website, or emailed to jsc@junee.nsw.gov.au. The exhibition page lists the exact streets and hours.

Council clarifies that the proposed sheep feedlot was deferred, not approved
Council issued a statement correcting reporting in the Junee Independent of 2 July 2026 about a proposed sheep feedlot considered at the recent Ordinary Council Meeting. Council said councillors resolved to defer consideration of the development application to allow further consideration of issues and questions raised at the meeting, that no development consent has been granted, and that the matter will be subject to further assessment and reporting before returning to Council for determination.
What this means for you: The application is still undetermined, so it will come back to a future Ordinary Council Meeting. Business papers are published on the council's website on the Friday before each monthly meeting, and residents can apply to address the meeting.

Council adopts its 2026/27 Operational Plan and budget
Council adopted the Operational Plan 2026/27 on 23 June 2026. General rates rise by the 3.8% IPART rate cap, domestic waste charges by 8% and residential sewer charges by 4%. The budget projects a consolidated operating result of $1.17 million on total income of $23.13 million, with $5.085 million of capital spending and no cuts to services.
What this means for you: For households, the concrete changes are the rate cap of 3.8% on the general rate and the separate 8% increase to the domestic waste charge and 4% to residential sewer. The plan also sets out the year's roadworks and lists the fees and charges that apply.
