Waste & recycling

How Wyndham's bins work today. The council describes three kerbside bins: a red-lid garbage bin collected every week, and a yellow-lid recycling bin and a green-lid food and garden organics bin, each collected fortnightly on alternate weeks. Glass bottles and jars go in the yellow recycling bin; there is no separate glass bin. From Monday 12 October 2026 the council is redrawing its collection zones, so check your bin day with the council's address lookup.

Bin collection at a glance

Garbage (red lid)
Weekly, 140-litre binGoes to landfill. Keep recyclables, green waste, e-waste, batteries and hazardous waste out. An additional 140-litre garbage bin costs $176.70 a year, or you can upgrade to 240 litres for $64.10, added to your rates.
Recycling (yellow lid)
Fortnightly, 240-litre binHard plastics, metal cans and foil, paper and cardboard, and glass bottles and jars (loose, even if broken). No bagged recycling, soft plastics, polystyrene or milk cartons. The council says the contents go to Visy's recycling facility.
Food and garden organics (green lid)
Fortnightly, 240-litre bin, on the week recycling isn't collectedAll food scraps (including meat, bones and dairy) plus grass, branches, leaves and weeds. No plastic bags or compostable or biodegradable liners, even certified ones; use paper liners or none. Free kitchen caddies are available at the Civic Centre and the Manor Lakes, Tarneit and Point Cook community learning centres. The council's bin-requests page lists this bin as one of every property's three core services, while its bin-services page refers to residents who 'opt for' it. The 2026–27 budget plans to 'introduce the Universal Food Organics / Green Organics (FOGO) service to all households'.
Glass (purple lid)
No separate glass bin — glass goes in the yellow recycling binVictorian law requires councils to offer a separate glass service by 2027 and FOGO by 2030, either as a kerbside bin or at a drop-off point. The state's new lid colours are purple for glass, lime green for FOGO, yellow for mixed recycling and red for general rubbish. On the Wyndham pages we checked (Sep 2026), the council hasn't published a date for a glass service.
Hard and green waste
3 free bookable collections per household per financial yearEach is up to 3 m³; you can combine them, up to 9 m³. Renters are eligible. Items no heavier than 55 kg and no longer than 1.5 m, sorted into general hard waste, green waste and whitegoods/metal. Properties without the council waste charge aren't eligible, but can buy a collection for $111.50. You can swap your tip voucher for an extra collection, or the other way round.Book hard waste →
Drop-off: Refuse Disposal Facility (tip)
470 Wests Road, WerribeeTransfer station open Mon–Fri 8am–4pm, Sat–Sun 8.30am–4pm; closed Good Friday, Christmas Day, New Year's Day and on days of 38°C or more. The council's waste charge includes one free trip to the tip each year (a waste disposal voucher); the 2025–26 voucher expires on 30 September 2026. Council address lookupFrom Monday 12 October 2026 about 25,000 residents will have a different collection day; the biggest shift is from Tuesday and Friday to the day before (Monday and Thursday).
