Waste & recycling

How Wodonga's bins work today. Every household has three bins, collected by the council's contractor Cleanaway under the Halve Waste program: a green-lid organics bin collected every week, and a yellow-lid recycling bin and a red-lid general waste bin collected in alternate fortnights. There is no separate glass bin and no kerbside hard waste collection. Occupied residential properties get two free tipping vouchers a year with the rates notice, for the Resource Recovery Centre on Kane Road.

Bin collection at a glance

Food and garden organics (green lid)
Weekly — 240 litresAll food scraps, including meat, fish, bones, citrus, onions, cooked food and dairy; tea bags and coffee grounds; grass clippings, sticks, weeds and flowers; and pet droppings. Not plastic or 'biodegradable' bags, soil, nappies, treated timber or clothing. Use only the approved Halve Waste compostable liners: a year's supply arrives each April, and free small rolls can be picked up at the council's Hovell St office.Recycling and waste FAQs →
Recycling (yellow lid)
Fortnightly, alternating with the red-lid bin — 240 litresHalve Waste's 'Which bin' search lists what goes in. Soft plastics only in the pilot's orange bags (below), never loose; batteries, gas bottles and anything with a plug, battery or cord don't go in any bin. General waste (red lid)

Collection rules

Wodonga Resource Recovery Centre
29 Kane Rd — Mon–Fri 9am–5pm, Sat–Sun 10am–4pmClosed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Free drop-off for cardboard and paper, plastics, glass bottles and jars, cans, car batteries, clean chemical drums, scrap metal, waste oil, paint and e-waste; charges apply for items such as concrete, green waste, timber, soil, gas bottles, mattresses, whitegoods and tyres. Soft plastics pilot
Orange soft-plastic bags in the yellow-lid bin, for registered householdsHalve Waste describes a kerbside soft plastics pilot for AlburyCity, Alpine, Indigo and Wodonga residents: registered households collect clean soft plastics in council-supplied orange bags and put the full, tied bag in the recycling bin. We describe the bins the way the council and Halve Waste do. Halve Waste's website serves Wodonga and neighbouring councils on both sides of the border, including AlburyCity. The Victorian four-bin reform (with a separate glass bin) is not in place in Wodonga. Services and charges change, so check the council's pages below.
