Wodonga (VIC) council rates — what you pay and when

Rates pay for most council services. In Victoria, the state sets a yearly cap on how much a council can raise its average rates. For 2026–27 the cap is 2.75%, and Wodonga's adopted budget raises average general rates by 2.38%, below the cap. The cap applies to the average across all properties, so your own bill can rise or fall by more. It moves with your property's value compared with others in the same rating category. Wodonga has no municipal charge. Its two waste charges aren't capped, and for 2026–27 both are unchanged.

2026–27 rate rise: Average general rates +2.38% (cap 2.75%)The budget's average general rate per property goes from a base of $2,297 to $2,352 (budget section 4.1.1(j)). The Mayor's introduction to the budget says the council decided not to adopt the full rate cap because of cost-of-living pressures.

Waste charges (2026–27): Garbage and recycling $285; waste management levy $101Each per rateable property and unchanged from 2025–26 (budget section 4.1.1(g)); your notice shows which apply to your property. The council says about half of its waste charge covers community waste services, such as street bins and the Resource Recovery Centre, and the rest covers the bin collection contract. When it's due: 4 instalments: 30 Sep 2026, 30 Nov 2026, 1 Mar 2027 and 31 May 2027Dates from the council's payments page; the adopted budget gives 28 February 2027 for the third instalment, which falls on a Sunday. Interest on overdue rates: 10% a yearThe adopted budget sets the penalty interest rate on rate arrears for 2026–27 at 10%, the maximum under the Penalty Interest Rates Act 1983. Interest runs from the date each instalment was due.

Also on your notice: ESVF: Emergency Services and Volunteers Fund — a state levyThe council collects it for the Victorian Government and passes it on. It replaced the Fire Services Property Levy from 1 July 2025. It isn't council revenue and isn't covered by the rate cap.
