Waste & recycling

When your bins go out, and how Weddin Shire handles waste across Grenfell and the villages of Bimbi, Caragabal, Greenethorpe and Quandialla. Council runs the collection itself (by day labour) rather than through a contractor, and it is a two-bin service: a 240-litre general-waste bin with a GREEN lid and a 240-litre recycling bin with a yellow lid. That green lid catches people out — in most NSW councils green means food-and-garden organics, but in Weddin it is your ordinary rubbish bin, and green waste is actually banned from both bins. In Grenfell the general-waste bin is collected weekly (Tuesday on the western side of town, Thursday on the eastern side) and recycling fortnightly (Monday west, Friday east); in the four villages the two bins alternate on a Wednesday, one week garbage, the next week recycling. Recycling is trucked to the Cowra Waste Depot under an arrangement with Cowra Council.

Bin collection at a glance

General waste (green lid in Weddin, 240 L)

Not offered — Weddin has no organics binCouncil's adopted Waste and Recycling Kerbside Collection Policy allocates two bins only, and lists green waste among the items prohibited from both of them. Clean green waste (lawn clippings, prunings, branches and stumps) is accepted free of charge from residents at the Grenfell Waste Depot.
Bulky / hard waste
No kerbside collection published — self-haul to the Grenfell Waste Depot, much of it freeUnder the adopted 2026-27 fees, shire residents pay nothing to drop general household waste in loads under 2 m3 (over that, $22 per m3 for the excess), nothing for furniture, white goods, or sorted steel, concrete, bricks and timber. Mattresses and bases are charged per item ($16 cot, $21 single, $31 double, $41 king or queen) and an unsorted trailer load is $50.

Council does not publish a dedicated Community Recycling Centre for paint, chemicals, gas bottles or batteries — its fee schedule lists prohibited waste as requiring specific approval and a price on application, so ring Environmental Services on (02) 6343 1717 before you drive out. The Caragabal (Mid Western Highway) and Quandialla (McAlister Road) depots are shown as currently closed.

Bins go out the night before or by 5am; the run generally operates between 5am and 5pm. Bins should sit at least a metre apart facing the street, and a bin that is not out when the truck passes waits for the next scheduled service. Kerbside collection is provided only to properties inside the Grenfell township and the four village collection areas. Frequencies, depot hours and gate fees can change — confirm on the official sources below.
