Strathbogie Shire is a rural shire about 125 km north of Melbourne, on the Hume and Goulburn Valley freeways. Its main towns are Euroa and Nagambie, with Avenel, Longwood, Violet Town and Strathbogie among the smaller communities. The council says around 80% of the land is used for farming, the main driver of the local economy, and the shire runs from the Strathbogie Ranges in the east to the Goulburn River and Lake Nagambie in the west.

Shared with neighbouring councils: Avenel (about 74% inside), Baddaginnie (33%), Boho South (66%), Creek Junction (20%), Mangalore (72%), Moorilim (50%), Nalinga (27%), Ruffy (93%), Tarcombe (61%) and Whroo (53%).
