City profile
Nillumbik calls itself 'the Green Wedge Shire'. It lies in Melbourne's north-east, about 25 km from the CBD, and runs from the Yarra River in the south to Kinglake National Park in the north, with the Plenty River and Yan Yean Road on its western side. The council says green wedge land covers over 90% of the Shire. The council describes Eltham, Diamond Creek, Research, North Warrandyte, Plenty and part of Greensborough as its suburbs; Hurstbridge, St Andrews and Panton Hill as rural townships; and places such as Smiths Gully, Strathewen, Christmas Hills, Kangaroo Ground and Yarrambat as villages. The council's offices are at 32 Civic Drive, Greensborough.

The council names its suburbs, townships and villages but doesn't publish a full list, so this list comes from the official Vicmap locality boundaries, checked against the council boundary. Six localities are split with neighbouring councils: about 72% of Eltham North's area is in Nillumbik, 55% of Doreen's, 34% of Kinglake's, 27% of Greensborough's, 27% of Kinglake West's and 9% of Yan Yean's. A sliver of Watsonia North (about 4%) is left out. Postcodes come from the CSA's suburb and postcode table (Yan Yean's from the neighbouring City of Whittlesea's rows).
