Waste & recycling

When your bins go out, and how Narromine Shire handles recycling and waste across Narromine, Trangie and Tomingley. Council runs a three-bin kerbside service in the three towns: a red-lidded landfill-waste bin and a green-lidded food-and-garden-organics (FOGO) bin both collected weekly, and a yellow-lidded recycling bin collected fortnightly on the same day as your landfill bin. In Narromine, bins north of the railway go out Monday morning and bins south of the railway Wednesday morning; Trangie and Tomingley are collected Friday mornings. Some Tomingley zones (R1, R5, RU5, IN1 and B2) get a landfill bin only. Council publishes a printed waste and recycling calendar each year rather than an address lookup — the link is below.

Bin collection at a glance

General waste (red lid)
WeeklyCouncil calls this the landfill-waste bin. Bins should go out the night before; bins over 60kg are not collected.
Recycling (yellow lid)
FortnightlyCollected on the same day as your landfill bin, in alternating weeks (zones A and B — see the annual waste calendar). Recycling bins cannot be collected from a laneway and must be left at the front of the premises.
WeeklyIntroduced in July 2018 as a three-council collaboration with Dubbo Regional and Mid-Western Regional Councils (members of NetWaste, a regional waste group covering 26 central-western NSW councils). Organics are composted at the Dubbo Regional Organics Processing Plant at the Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre. Households get a kitchen caddy and an ongoing free supply of compostable cornstarch liners — Council asks that no other liner be used.
Bulky / hard waste
No kerbside bulky collection — 2 free waste vouchers a year insteadRate-paying residential property owners receive two waste disposal vouchers each financial year, valid for a self-hauled domestic mixed-waste or green-waste load (one voucher per sedan, wagon, van, utility or 6x4 trailer) at the Narromine, Trangie or Tomingley facilities. Loads must be sorted or normal fees apply. Vouchers expire 30 June and cannot be replaced. Tyres, mattresses, asbestos, regulated waste, commercial waste and dead animals are excluded.
Problem waste & drop-off
Community Recycling Stations in Narromine and Trangie; nearest full CRC is at DubboRecycling cabinets at Council's Customer Service and Payments Centre, the Narromine Waste Management Facility and Trangie Library take household batteries, printer cartridges, mobile phones and smoke detectors; light globes and CFLs at Trangie Library and the Narromine facility, and vapes at the Narromine facility. Car batteries, fluoro tubes, gas bottles and fire extinguishers go to a Community Recycling Centre — the nearest is the Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre, Cooba Road, Dubbo (free, year-round).

Kerbside collection is available in the urban areas of Narromine, Trangie and Tomingley; properties outside the collection area use the Narromine and Trangie Waste Management Facilities or the Tomingley Waste Transfer Station. The Trangie facility is being converted from a landfill to a transfer station with NSW EPA funding (works from September 2025, expected completion June 2027) — Council says opening hours, fees and accepted materials do not change. Frequencies, fees and facility hours can change, so confirm on the official sources below.
