Waste & recycling

How Moonee Valley's household bins work today. Homes on the council's service have three bins: general rubbish (red lid), collected every week; recycling (yellow lid), every 2 weeks; and food and garden organics, or FOGO (green lid), every 2 weeks. Glass bottles and jars currently go in the yellow recycling bin. Enter your address in the council's interactive map to find your collection days.

Bin collection at a glance

General rubbish (red lid)
Every weekFor items that can't be recycled or composted, such as plastic bags, polystyrene, nappies, broken glass and takeaway cups. The council says its contractor, Cleanaway, takes it to Melbourne Regional Landfill in Ravenhall. Put bins out the night before; collections start from 6am (5.30am on main roads such as Mount Alexander Road and Keilor Road).What goes in this bin →
Recycling (yellow lid)
Every 2 weeksClean paper and cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, steel and aluminium cans, foil, and clean glass bottles and jars, all loose (no bags). Coffee cups, cartons, textiles and food go elsewhere. The council says Cleanaway takes it to a sorting facility in Laverton.What goes in recycling →
Food and garden organics (green lid)
Every 2 weeksFood scraps (including meat, bones, dairy and bread) and garden waste. No plastic, compostable or biodegradable liners or containers. The council says the collection stays fortnightly 'until further notice'.What goes in FOGO →
Separate glass bin
Rollout funded in the 2026/27 budget; no start date publishedThe adopted budget includes $2.90 million for the 'rollout of the 4th kerbside (glass) bin', which it says is required under the state's Circular Economy (Waste Management and Recycling) Act 2021. The council's waste pages don't yet give a date or lid colour, so until then glass bottles and jars stay in the yellow bin.Budget 2026/27 (PDF) →
Booked hard waste
2 free collections a year, up to 2 m³ eachFor properties that pay the waste service charge; the allowance runs from 1 July to 30 June. Book online; items go no more than 5 metres inside your front boundary, not on the nature strip. Up to 2 spring mattresses and bundled branches can be booked too. Cancel before 5pm on the Thursday before your collection week or you lose that collection.Hard waste →
Transfer Station

We describe the bins the way the council does. Your bins are paid for through the waste service charge on your rates notice (see Rates & fees); properties that use a private collection don't pay it. Braille and raised-letter bin stickers are being trialled for residents who are blind or have low vision (call 9243 8888). Moonee Valley doesn't yet have the separate glass bin in the state's standard household recycling system; check the council's pages for the rollout date.
