Waste & recycling

How Moira Shire's bins work. The council runs kerbside collection in all towns and along connector roads. Under its Kerbside Collection Policy there are four bins: a red-lid landfill bin and a yellow-lid recycling bin, collected on alternate fortnights; a green-lid organics bin, collected every week in residentially zoned areas; and a purple-lid glass bin, collected every four weeks. There is no kerbside hard rubbish collection. Your collection days are on the council's calendar and in its waste app.

Bin collection at a glance

Landfill (red lid)
Fortnightly — 120 litres standard (80 L available)For nappies, wrapped kitty litter, broken crockery and glassware, take-away coffee cups, foam trays and soft plastics. Not timber, bricks, soil, paint, chemicals, hot ash, batteries or e-waste. A 240-litre bin is available only to households of 6 or more people, or with two or more children in nappies, on a signed statutory declaration; fees apply. Residents whose medical condition creates extra waste can apply for an additional 120-litre bin free of charge.What goes in the landfill bin →
Recycling (yellow lid)
Fortnightly, on alternate weeks to landfill — 240 litres standardPlastic bottles and containers, aluminium and steel cans, paper and cardboard, magazines and newspapers, and milk and juice cartons. Not soft plastics, glass bottles and jars (purple-lid bin), polystyrene, waxed cardboard, food, nappies, clothing or crockery. The council says recycling goes to Cleanaway's materials recovery facility in Albury.What goes in the recycling bin →
Organics (green lid)
Weekly — 240 litres standard, where eligibleFood scraps including meat, bones and dairy, soiled paper towel and tissues, grass, leaves, flowers and prunings under 10 cm across. Not plastic (including fruit stickers), soil, rocks or treated timber. Households get a kitchen caddy and a year's supply of compostable liners. The service covers households in residentially zoned areas; others can drop food and garden waste at a resource recovery centre, or ask the council about a rural service.What goes in the organics bin →
Glass (purple lid)
Every four weeks — 120 litres standardGlass bottles and jars from food, drink, medicine and toiletries, with lids on. Not drinking glasses, crockery, vases, mirrors or light globes. Units and multiple residences can share an organics or glass bin; ask the council for an exemption form.What goes in the glass bin →
Hard rubbish
No kerbside hard rubbish collectionThe council says furniture and goods in reasonable condition that can be resold can be dropped at a resource recovery centre free of charge.Council page →
Resource recovery centres
Nine sites across the shireBarmah, Cobram, Nathalia, Numurkah, St James, Strathmerton, Tungamah, Yabba and Yarrawonga, each with its own opening days; Yarrawonga is open every day 8am–3pm. Card (EFTPOS) only at most sites. All close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Anzac Day and Good Friday, and on Catastrophic and Total Fire Ban days. Bin colours and collection frequencies are as set out in the council's Kerbside Collection Policy (adopted 28 August 2024), which moved landfill to fortnightly and organics to weekly from 1 February 2025. Kerbside collection is compulsory for properties with a dwelling on a collection route. Services change, so check the council's pages below.
