Waste & recycling

How Maroondah's household bins work today. Homes have three bins: a general waste bin, collected every week (even on public holidays), and a recycling bin and a food and garden organics (FOGO) bin, collected on alternate weeks. From August to the end of October 2026 the council is changing general waste lids from dark green to red and recycling lids from blue to yellow. Glass bottles and jars go in the recycling bin. Bins go out by 6am on collection day (or the night before). Use the council's address lookup to find your collection days.

Bin collection at a glance

General waste (dark green lid, changing to red)
Every weekCollected on the same day each week, even on public holidays such as Christmas Day. There are two sizes, 120 litres and 80 litres; the 80-litre bin costs less (see Rates & fees). For household rubbish, nappies, ceramics, bagged or wrapped meat and food scraps, securely wrapped window glass, mirrors and light globes, and bagged soft plastics. Not for batteries, garden waste, e-waste, recyclables or hot ashes. Some homes already have a red lid because their bin was replaced since 2021.What goes in this bin →
Recycling (blue lid, changing to yellow)
Every 2 weeksCollected on the same day as your general waste, on the week your FOGO bin isn't collected. Paper and cardboard, containers, and glass bottles and jars go in it. The accepted items haven't changed with the new lid colour.What goes in recycling →
Food and garden organics — FOGO (lime-green lid)
Every 2 weeks, alternating with recyclingFood scraps (including meat, bones, dairy and seafood shells), grass, leaves, prunings, and small branches and logs up to 10 cm across and 40 cm long. Use only council-supplied compostable liners, newspaper or paper towel, or no liner. The council delivers liners to eligible households once a year; the next delivery is planned for February–March 2027. The FOGO service started in 2023, and its lids aren't changing.What goes in this bin →
Bin lid changeover
August to end of October 2026On each recycling collection day, put out both your general waste and recycling bins and leave them out until 5pm, even if empty, until both lids have been changed. Lids are only changed on recycling days. On 8 September 2026 the council said more than 33,000 lids had been changed. Glass (separate bin)

Hard waste and bundled prunings
2 booked collections a year per householdFor households that pay the residential bin charge, each financial year: two single collections (hard waste or bundled prunings, or one of each), or one double collection. A single collection is up to 2 m³ (2 m long, 1 m deep, 1 m high). Book before you put anything out; bookings can't be changed or cancelled. Up to two extra paid collections a year can be booked on the contractor's online portal. Not accepted: batteries, building waste, asbestos, chemicals, gas bottles, garden waste (except tied bundles of prunings), tyres and car parts.Book hard waste →
Drop-off
Recycling and waste centres in neighbouring council areasThe council lists paid sites nearby, including the Knox Transfer Station (Wantirna South), the Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre (Vermont South), the Monash Waste Transfer and Recycling Station (Notting Hill), and Coldstream Recycling & Waste Transfer Station. Check opening hours, accepted items and charges with each site.
