Waste & recycling

How Manningham's household bins work. The food and garden (FOGO) bin, with a green lid, is collected every week. The garbage bin (red lid) and the recycling bin (yellow lid) are each collected every two weeks, on alternate weeks, on the same day as your FOGO bin. The standard service is an 80-litre garbage bin, a 240-litre recycling bin and a 240-litre FOGO bin. Glass bottles and jars go in the recycling bin.

Bin collection at a glance

FOGO — food and garden organics (green lid)
Every weekFood scraps (including meat, bones, dairy and seafood), tissues and paper towel, grass clippings, prunings, weeds, leaves and small branches up to 100 mm across. No tea bags, plastic or 'biodegradable' bags, pet waste, nappies, soil or packaging. Liners must be lime green and certified to AS 4736; other liners count as contamination and the bin may not be emptied. Each household with the council's service can collect one free roll of liners a year from the Civic Centre or the Depot, with proof of residency.About FOGO →
Garbage (red lid)
Every 2 weeksCollected on the alternate fortnight to recycling. For household rubbish, soft plastic packaging, wrapped nappies, bagged polystyrene, and wrapped crockery, Pyrex, glassware and window glass. No garden waste, recyclables, chemicals, medical waste or building materials. The standard bin is 80 litres; a 120-litre bin costs $79.50 a year more (2026–27).What goes in this bin →
Recycling (yellow lid)
Every 2 weeksCollected on the alternate fortnight to garbage. Empty glass bottles and jars; empty plastic bottles and containers; cans, aerosols and clean foil trays; paper, cardboard, and empty milk and juice cartons. Put items in loose, not bagged. No soft plastics, polystyrene, crockery or drinking glasses, light globes, window glass or mirrors.What goes in recycling →
Glass (separate bin)
No separate glass bin — glass goes in the recycling binThe state requires councils to start a separate glass-only kerbside service (purple lid) by July 2027. Manningham is campaigning against the mandate with other councils: it is asking the state to extend the deadline, release its business case and expand the Container Deposit Scheme to wine and spirit bottles. The council says 88% of the more than 1,700 Manningham residents who answered its 2026 survey opposed a glass-only bin; the survey was voluntary and the council says it isn't statistically representative.Council's glass campaign →
Hard rubbish and bundled branches
Up to 2 booked collections per calendar yearFor households with the council's residential bin service. Each standard collection is up to 2 m³, or combine both into one 4 m³ collection; the two bookings are shared between hard rubbish and bundled branches. Items must weigh under 50 kg and be no longer than 1.5 m. No chemicals, household garbage, garden waste, building materials, batteries or gas bottles. Drop-off
No council-run tip in ManninghamThe council lists the nearest facilities run by other councils: Banyule Waste Recovery Centre (Bellfield), Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Transfer Centre (Vermont South), Nillumbik Recycling and Recovery Centre (Plenty) and Knox Transfer Station (Wantirna South).
