Waste & recycling

How Hume's household bins work. Every home has three bins: a red-lid garbage bin collected weekly, a yellow-lid recycling bin collected every two weeks, and a bright-green-lid food and garden bin collected every two weeks, on the alternate week to recycling. The lid colours are the council's own description; some older bins have a different coloured lid. Glass bottles and jars go in the yellow recycling bin. Service disruption (Sep 2026)
Protected industrial action is affecting bin collectionsThe council says protected industrial action by the Australian Services Union, part of multi-employer bargaining involving Hume and seven other councils, is disrupting waste services. Its advice: put your bin out on your usual day, and if it isn't collected, leave it out for a catch-up collection. You don't need to report it.Latest waste updates →
Garbage (red lid)
WeeklyStandard service is an 80-litre or 140-litre bin. Households that choose the 80-litre bin get a $23.30 rebate (2026–27). Bag or wrap rubbish before it goes in.
Recycling (yellow lid)
Every two weeksPaper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars (lids on), hard plastic bottles and containers, steel and aluminium cans. Put items in loose, not bagged. Broken glass, drinking glasses, soft plastics and cartons go in the garbage bin.
Food and garden (bright green lid)
Every two weeks, alternating with recyclingEvery household has one; the council says this is required under the state's Recycling Victoria policy. It is part of the standard service covered by the kerbside waste charge, and comes with a free kitchen caddy. Older bins may have a maroon or dark green lid.What goes in each bin →
Glass
In the yellow recycling bin; no separate glass binVictorian law requires councils to offer a separate glass service by July 2027. Hume says it 'strongly opposes' a mandatory fourth bin, estimates it would cost residents more than $10 million, and is one of 42 councils asking the state to delay the deadline and expand the Container Deposit Scheme instead. Hard waste
Free bookable collections using your yearly waste vouchersEach voucher covers 2 m³; households get 10 m³ of free disposal a year, usable for hard waste collections, bundled branch collections or tip visits. Up to 2 vouchers (4 m³) per hard waste collection. Items go on your front lawn or driveway, not the nature strip. Book online or call 9205 2200 (option 3).
