The council's stated direction
Hume's direction is set by the Hume Community Vision 2045 ('a thriving community with a strong sense of belonging') and the Council Plan 2025–2029, adopted on 23 June 2025. The Plan also contains the council's Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan and Disability Action Plan. Each year it is carried out through a Council Annual Action Plan and the budget.
The Council Plan has four priorities and 11 strategic objectives: a liveable city of well designed and connected places; a climate resilient city with a healthy natural environment; a healthy community that is inclusive and proud; and a well governed Council that is strategic and trusted. The 2026/27 Council Annual Action Plan lists 66 strategic actions, and the council publishes quarterly progress reports.
The 2026–27 budget, adopted on 22 June 2026, plans $153.96 million of capital works. Named items include $8.71m for local road resurfacing, $7.92m to start the Jacksons Creek Vilana Drive Community Centre in Sunbury, $5.98m for footpaths, $5.55m to complete the Hume Hockey second pitch and pavilion, and $3.12m to start the Mitchells Lane road reconstruction.

Construction starts in 2026–27The 2026–27 budget allocates $7.92 million to start the community centre, with further amounts in the council's 4-year capital works program. $1.8m of the 2026–27 amount is listed as grant funding.
Macedon Street, Sunbury streetscape upgrade
In design; construction scheduled early to mid-2027A $200,000 upgrade at 52–60 Macedon Street: footpath and kerb renewal, new seating and bins, landscaping, accessibility upgrades and signage. Part of the council's Places Program.

Food and garden bin for every household
Collections from July 2024Every household now has a bright-green-lid food and garden bin, collected fortnightly as part of the standard kerbside service. The council says this meets the state's Recycling Victoria requirement for a food and garden service by 2030.
