How Greater Dandenong's household bins work today. Homes on the council's service have a rubbish bin with a red lid, collected every week, and a recycling bin with a yellow lid, collected every two weeks. Most homes also have a food and garden waste bin with a green lid, collected every two weeks: it comes with bin options A to D, and options E and F have no garden bin. Rubbish (red lid): Every week120 litres as standard, or 80 litres if you choose a smaller bin (a cheaper bin option). Goes to landfill. For things that can't go in the other bins, such as nappies (wrapped), plastic bags and wrapping, and ceramics and broken glass.Rubbish bin →
Recycling (yellow lid): Every 2 weeks240 litres, or 360 litres for an extra fee. Paper and cardboard, milk and juice cartons, empty glass bottles and jars, and aluminium and steel cans. Put items in loose, not in bags.Recycling bin →
Food and garden waste (green lid): Every 2 weeks, on bin options A to D240 or 120 litres. Food scraps and garden waste such as grass clippings, leaves and small branches. Put food in loose or wrapped in paper towel or newspaper. No bags of any kind, including compostable ones. Glass (separate bin): No separate glass bin — glass goes in the recycling binThe state requires councils to offer a kerbside glass service by 1 July 2027. In October 2025 the council approved purple-lid glass bins, proposed for delivery in April–May 2027. On 15 June 2026 it then voted to defer the glass bin, and the move of the food and garden service to an 'opt-out' model, until the Victorian Government finalises its service standards, and to ask the state to reconsider and expand the Container Deposit Scheme. Hard rubbish: 1 free collection a year, bookedFor homes with a council kerbside service, once each financial year. Book online or with WM Waste Management Services on 9721 1915 (8am–5pm, Monday to Friday). Up to 3 cubic metres: furniture, appliances, mattresses (up to 2), scrap metal and similar. Drop-off: No council tip — nearby transfer stations charge feesThe council says it has no tip or transfer station of its own, and lists nearby private and neighbouring-council sites, including Cleanaway Clayton South, Veolia Hampton Park and the Frankston Regional Recycling and Recovery Centre in Skye. Call ahead for hours and fees. The council also runs Reuse and Recycle Drop Off Days four times a year, and has recycling stations for household batteries, mobile phones and light globes at its customer service centres.Transfer stations →
