Mayor & councillors

Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional is an undivided (at-large) council: its nine councillors are elected across the whole local government area by proportional representation, rather than by ward. The councillors elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor from among themselves — there is no popularly elected mayor here. The current council was sworn in at an extraordinary meeting in Cootamundra on 15 October 2024. Alongside their ordinary duties, the councillors also sit on the Demerger Transition Committee that is preparing to split the council back into separate Cootamundra and Gundagai councils.

Mayor
Cr Abb McAlisterElected Mayor by the councillors after the September 2024 election. This is his second term as Mayor of CGRC; he was previously Mayor of the former Gundagai Shire and lives in Gundagai.
Deputy Mayor
Cr Rosalind Wight (Independent)Elected Deputy Mayor by the councillors. Previously served on the former Cootamundra Shire Council and the first term of the merged council.

Where councillors meet
6pm on the fourth Tuesday of the month, alternating between Cootamundra and GundagaiMeetings alternate between the Alby Schultz Meeting Centre, Cooper Street, Cootamundra and the Council Chambers, 255 Sheridan Street, Gundagai (December's meeting is the second Tuesday). Meetings are webcast, and residents may address the public forum with prior approval by lodging a speaker registration form.

Casual vacancies can change the makeup, so the council's official page has the most current list.
