West Wimmera Shire collects kerbside bins in the townships of Kaniva, Miram, Lillimur, Serviceton, Apsley, Edenhope, Goroke and Harrow, and at rural properties on the direct route to those towns. Each serviced property has a rubbish bin and a yellow-lid mixed recycling bin, and urban properties also have a purple-lid glass bin collected every four weeks. There is no food and garden organics (FOGO) bin. Everything else goes to one of the council's seven transfer stations.

Rubbish: 120-litre binThe 120-litre size is set by the 2026–27 waste charges; the council's 'What can go in your bins' flyer in its New Resident Kit shows a red lid. Food scraps and garden waste go in this bin — there is no organics bin.
Mixed recycling (yellow lid): Paper, cardboard, cans, and plastics numbered 1, 2 or 5The council's flyer shows a 240-litre bin. No plastic bags, soft plastics, bagged recycling, food or garden waste. Glass bottles and jars go in the purple glass bin where you have one. An audit carried out for the council in November 2024 found contamination in mixed recycling had risen to 26.2%, and says whole loads risk being treated as rubbish if it keeps rising.
Glass (purple lid): Every four weeks, never in the same week as mixed recyclingCompulsory for all urban residents. Rinsed glass bottles and jars only, with lids removed — no broken glass, crockery, drinking glasses or light bulbs. Food & garden organics: No FOGO collectionThe council says it is not rolling out FOGO because the closest processing facility is in Melbourne, and that it would consult the community if a local or regional facility is established. Garden waste can go to the transfer stations.

Bin colours and sizes are as the council describes them on its own pages and New Resident Kit flyer (checked September 2026). The 2026–27 annual waste charge is $421.50 for an urban 120-litre service plus $63 for the urban glass bin, and $495 for a rural 120-litre service — see Rates & fees. The council is surveying residents about the future of its waste services until 2 October 2026.
