Waste & recycling

Wentworth Shire's kerbside service is changing. Until October 2026 most eligible households have a single 240-litre general-waste bin emptied once a week, with recycling taken to a landfill or transfer station rather than collected from the kerb. From 5 October 2026 the council moves to a three-bin service: a lime-green-lidded food-and-garden-organics (FOGO) bin, a yellow-lidded recycling bin and a general-waste bin, with new FOGO and recycling bins, a kitchen caddy and compostable liners delivered to eligible properties in the last two weeks of September 2026. Collections are run by Cleanaway and your regular weekly collection day does not change. Bin days here are set by town rather than by an address lookup — Monday for Wentworth, Pomona and Dareton; Tuesday for the Coomealla and Curlwaa irrigation districts, River Road and Boeill Creek; Wednesday for Trentham Cliffs, Gol Gol, Gol Gol North, the Buronga irrigation areas, Buronga township and Mourquong.

Bin collection at a glance

General waste (red lid)
Weekly now; fortnightly from 5 October 2026One 240-litre bin emptied once per week under the current service, with a 100 kg weight limit. Under the three-bin service it is collected in the alternate week to recycling. Some existing general-waste bins have a dark green lid; the council says all new rollout areas and future replacements will be red-lidded.
Recycling (yellow lid)
No kerbside recycling bin until 5 October 2026, then fortnightlyUntil the rollout, co-mingled containers, cardboard and glass are dropped off at Buronga Landfill, or at the Wentworth and Dareton transfer stations. From October the yellow bin takes paper, cardboard, rigid plastics and steel/aluminium cans and is collected in the alternate week to general waste.
Not offered now; weekly from 5 October 2026Eligible properties receive a 240-litre FOGO bin, a kitchen caddy and a roll of 150 council-approved compostable liners, with a further roll each year for the first three years. The FOGO bin is collected every week, alongside general waste in week one and recycling in week two. Delivered with Halve Waste, a regional waste-reduction program the council says now supports 18 councils.
Bulky / hard waste
One free kerbside collection per property per calendar year — apply firstHouseholds apply through the council's eligibility form and are contacted to arrange collection within 2–4 weeks. Limits are 2 m x 2 m x 1 m per address, nothing longer than 2 m, and no single item over 40 kg. Furniture, mattresses, whitegoods, lawn mowers and scrap metal are accepted; chemicals, glass, batteries, green waste, tyres and car bodies are not. The last scheduled 2026 collection date is Wednesday 25 November 2026.
Problem waste & drop-off
Buronga Landfill Community Recycling Centre, 258 Arumpo Road, BurongaAn EPA-funded Community Recycling Centre for household problem waste — paints, household and car batteries, gas bottles, aerosols, fire extinguishers, fluorescent globes and non-motor oils — free to any NSW resident. A Front End Recycling Facility opened at the site on 14 May 2026, so cardboard, co-mingled recycling, scrap metal, waste oil, DrumMuster containers and Round Again reusables can be dropped before the weighbridge. Residents can also apply for two free green-waste disposal vouchers per household (Buronga, Dareton and Wentworth facilities). Landfill gatehouse: (03) 5022 0145.

Kerbside collection is provided to many but not all properties in the shire — the council describes the service as available to eligible households, and outlying localities such as Pooncarie and Ellerslie are served by tips and transfer stations rather than a kerbside run. The council's engagement site gives the three-bin start as 1 October 2026 while its media release gives the first collection week as 5–7 October 2026; confirm your own start date and collection day with the council.
