Waste & recycling

How Wellington's bins work since the week of 6 July 2026. Every serviced property has three bins: a 240-litre food organics and garden organics (FOGO) bin collected every week, and a 120-litre general rubbish bin and a 240-litre recycling bin collected on alternate weeks. Your collection day didn't change. Only properties inside the council's 'Declared Collection Areas' (mainly town and low-density residential land) get kerbside collection; everyone else uses the council's waste facilities.

Bin collection at a glance

General rubbish (red lid, 120 litres)
Fortnightly, alternating with recyclingCollection changed from weekly to fortnightly when FOGO started in July 2026. Households with higher needs can order an extra bin (a charge applies). An Additional General Rubbish Subsidy gives a free extra 120-litre bin to eligible households: people with a medical condition or disability that produces more hygiene or medical waste (with a doctor's letter), and families with two or more children under four.Bins and the subsidy →

Food and garden organics — FOGO (green lid, 240 litres)
Weekly, since the week of 6 July 2026Food scraps (including meat, bones, dairy and bread) and garden waste. Households got a 7-litre kitchen caddy and a year's supply of compostable liners; use only council-supplied liners, not plastic bags. The council says FOGO is part of the standard service, not optional. The organics are processed into compost by Pinegro Products in Morwell.FOGO guide →
Glass bin (purple lid)
Planned, not startedThe council says a 120-litre purple-lid glass bin, collected monthly, will be provided in line with Victorian Government requirements; it will be mandatory inside the collection areas and optional for businesses. The council is in the planning phase. It asked the Environment Minister in July 2025 and again in August 2026 to reconsider making the glass bin mandatory, saying the Container Deposit Scheme already recovers much of the glass.Glass bin →
Hard waste
One kerbside collection a year for properties with a bin service — 2026: 28 September to 30 OctoberYour week depends on your bin day: Friday bins from Monday 28 September, Thursday from 5 October, Wednesday from 12 October, Tuesday from 19 October, Monday from 26 October. Items must be out by 6am on the Monday of your week, and no more than 7 days before. Tips and transfer stations
Kilmany Resource Recovery Centre (Velore Road), Maffra Landfill, and transfer stations at Dargo, Heyfield, Loch Sport, Seaspray, Stratford and YarramKilmany is open every day (weekdays 8am–4.45pm, weekends 9am–4.45pm) except Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Catastrophic fire danger days.
