A quick snapshot of the Walcha local government area, drawn from official ABS estimates and the NSW Government's council data. Walcha sits on the southern New England tablelands at the edge of the Great Dividing Range, where the Oxley Highway meets Thunderbolts Way, roughly an hour south of Armidale. The township is about 1,067 metres above sea level. - Fine wool, beef and sheep grazing, and timberThe council describes the LGA as one of the largest stock-carrying areas in New South Wales and "one of the best fine wool growing areas in the world", and as a long-standing producer of high-quality native hardwoods and, more recently, softwood. Tourism and visitor services add to that: Walcha's Open Air Gallery of public sculpture and its sculpture soundtrail, the Apsley Falls on the edge of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, the Macleay Gorges, and about 205,000 hectares of national park, wilderness and state forest in the LGA — parts of Werrikimbe National Park are World Heritage listed.
