Waste & recycling

When your bins go out, and how Uralla Shire handles recycling and waste. Kerbside general waste and recycling are collected in Uralla township, Bundarra township and the Invergowrie, Arding and Saumarez Ponds areas; Kentucky gets a general-waste collection only. Your day depends on where you live: Mondays for Invergowrie, Arding and Saumarez Ponds, Tuesdays for Bundarra, Wednesdays for Uralla and Thursdays for Kentucky. There is no green food-organics (FOGO) bin here — a garden-organics bin is available as a paid opt-in service in Uralla township only. Bulky items are self-hauled to one of the council's four waste facilities rather than picked up from the kerb.

Bin collection at a glance

General waste (red lid)
Weekly — on your locality's set dayMondays: Invergowrie, Arding and Saumarez Ponds. Tuesdays: Bundarra area. Wednesdays: Uralla area. Thursdays: Kentucky (general waste only). Council says collections run on those days every day of the year, including public holidays, unless it notifies otherwise. Put bins out the night before; a missed bin waits until the next week's service for your area.
Recycling (yellow lid)
Weekly — same day as the red bin (not available in Kentucky)Kentucky has a general-waste collection only. A 24-hour 'hole in the wall' drop-off for sorted paper, cardboard and hard plastics operates at the front of the Uralla Waste Management Facility, and the Kentucky Recycling Station on Dorlie Lane is open 24 hours, 7 days.
Food & garden organics (green lid)
No FOGO service — garden-organics bin is opt-in, Uralla township onlyThere is no food-organics collection. The green waste bin takes garden organics only (lawn clippings, leaves, small branches up to 15 cm, prunings, flowers) — no food scraps. To get one you pay the annual service fee (charged pro rata) and buy a bin from council; sign up on (02) 6778 6300. Collection dates are on the annual kerbside calendar.
Bulky / hard waste
No kerbside bulky collection — self-haul to a council waste facilityMattresses, furniture, white goods, scrap metal, tyres and e-waste are accepted at the Uralla Waste Management Facility. Disposal charges apply to some items (asbestos, dead animals, mattresses, lounges, appliances containing CFCs, building waste, tyres and general household waste) — see the council's Fees and Charges page. Asbestos must be booked at least 24 hours ahead on (02) 6778 3558. We could not find any council page advertising a kerbside bulky pickup or tip voucher scheme; confirm with council before assuming there is none.
Problem waste & drop-off
Free — Uralla Community Recycling Centre, Tip Road (off Rowan Avenue)Free year-round drop-off for paint cans, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, motor and other oils, car and household batteries, smoke detectors, fluoro globes and tubes, and polystyrene, in household quantities (a guide of 20 litres or 20 kg per waste type). E-waste is collected at the same site by the volunteer group Computerbank New England, 9.30am–4.30pm Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays; council no longer accepts e-waste from outside the shire.

Council runs waste facilities at Uralla (Tip Road, off Rowan Avenue — open Mon, Tue and Thu 8am–4pm and Sat–Sun 9am–2pm, closed Wed and Fri; landfill after-hours 0418 907 590), Bundarra (off Bingara Road), Kingstown (Bendemeer Road, open Wed 8.30am–3.30pm and Sat 10am–2pm) and the Kentucky Recycling Station (Dorlie Lane, 24/7). Kerbside services can be arranged for some properties outside the listed collection areas — ask the Waste Operations Team Leader on (02) 6778 3558.
