When your bins go out, and how Upper Lachlan handles waste across a shire of 7,100 km² where most properties are nowhere near a bin truck. Kerbside collection runs in the villages only: garbage weekly (Tuesday in Crookwell; Wednesday in Gunning, Breadalbane, Collector and Dalton; Thursday in Taralga, Golspie, Binda, Lost River, Laggan and Grabben Gullen), with recycling and garden waste each collected fortnightly on their own week. Bigga and Tuena have no kerbside service. Properties outside the collection areas pay a Rural Waste Charge instead and receive a Rural Waste Card, which gives free tip entry for domestic waste and sorted recyclables at any of the council's six waste facilities. There is no address lookup tool — the council publishes printed collection calendars by town, linked below.

Bulky / hard waste: No kerbside cleanup — self-haul to a waste facility, user-paysCouncil does not run a free bulky-waste kerbside collection. Gate fees apply by load size (2026–27 resident rates: car $34, single-axle utility/trailer $47, large trailer $76). Mattresses are accepted at Crookwell, Gunning, Collector and Taralga for $53 (single) or $70 (double/queen/king). Rural Waste Card holders get free entry for domestic waste and sorted recyclables.
Problem waste & drop-off: Six waste facilities: Crookwell, Gunning, Taralga, Collector, Bigga and TuenaCrookwell (3848 Grabben Gullen Rd, Fri–Mon 10am–4pm), Taralga (Old Showground Rd, Thu/Sat/Sun), Gunning (Tip Lane off Dalton Rd, Wed/Sat/Sun), Collector (Currawang/Collector Rd, Sun), Bigga (Mulgowrie St, Sun), Tuena (Cemetery Rd, key access, $50 deposit). Glass, plastic, paper/cardboard and all scrap metal are free; batteries and white goods are accepted at Crookwell, Gunning, Collector and Taralga. Asbestos and builders' waste are accepted at Crookwell only. Household chemicals, paint and e-waste are not listed on the council's accepted-materials pages — check with council or the NSW EPA before hauling them.

Kerbside collection is available in Crookwell, Gunning, Breadalbane, Collector, Dalton, Taralga, Golspie, Binda, Lost River, Laggan and Grabben Gullen. Properties outside those areas are levied the Rural Waste Charge ($305.80 per rateable assessment in 2026–27, across 3,548 assessments) and issued a Rural Waste Card for free tip access. From Sunday 6 September 2026 the Bigga Waste Transfer Station will also accept household rubbish and mattresses from people without a Rural Waste Card, on payment of the council's adopted fees.
