Waste & recycling

Towong Shire runs a three-bin kerbside service for most homes: a red-lid general waste bin and a yellow-lid recycling bin, collected on alternate fortnights, and a green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin collected every week. Instead of a fourth (purple-lid) glass bin, the council provides glass drop-off at its two Resource Recovery Centres and at rural recycling sheds. Your collection day depends on which part of the Shire you live in — see the table below and the council's 2026 collection calendar.

General waste (red lid)
FortnightlyFor rubbish that can't be recycled or composted — soft plastics, nappies, broken crockery and drinking glasses, textiles, pet waste. The council says it goes to landfill near Albury.
Recycling (yellow lid)
Fortnightly, on the alternate week to your red binLoose, clean recyclables only (not bagged): paper and flattened cardboard, plastic containers coded 1–7, metal cans and foil, rinsed milk and juice cartons. The council says the contents are sorted in Albury by Cleanaway. For glass, see below.
Food & garden organics (green lid)
Weekly FOGO binFood scraps (including meat, dairy and bread) and garden clippings. Households were given a 7-litre kitchen caddy and compostable liners; free replacement liners are at Tallangatta Library, Corryong Library / council office, and (subject to stock) Walwa and Bethanga general stores and Eskdale IGA. Liners are optional — you can wrap scraps in newspaper or put them in loose. Properties in a Rural Zone can apply to opt out of the FOGO bin if they manage food and garden waste on the property.
Glass
Drop-off at the Corryong and Tallangatta Resource Recovery Centres or rural recycling sheds — no purple binThe council provides glass drop-off 'in lieu of the purple bin that exists in some Shires'. The council's glass FAQ also lists recycling sheds at Mitta Mitta Recreation Reserve, Talgarno Gap Road, Granya Recreation Reserve, Lucyvale Road, Tallangatta Creek Road and Corryong–Benambra Road. The council says glass can still go in the yellow bin for people who are unable to get to a centre or shed. Eligible drink containers can be returned for 10-cent refunds at Container Deposit Scheme operators (independent of the council) in Corryong and Tallangatta.
Hard & green waste

Bookings are compulsory and close on the Wednesday before, 4.45pm. Trailer or ute loads of non-commercial hard waste and green waste (branches up to 25 cm); no mattresses, batteries, tyres, gas bottles, chemicals, oils or asbestos. Resource Recovery Centres
Corryong (289 Sugarloaf Road) and Tallangatta (767 Murray Valley Hwy) — Thursdays 3–5pm (4–6pm in daylight saving) and Sundays 12–4pmClosed on public holidays, Total Fire Ban days and days rated Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger. Free: paper and cardboard, plastics, metals, glass, batteries, clean fill, scrap metal and whitegoods without gas, waste oil, drumMuster containers, dry empty paint tins and small e-waste. Bulky e-waste such as TVs, microwaves and fridges incurs a fee. No asbestos, chemicals, liquid paint or plasterboard. Bin colours and frequencies above are as the council describes them on its own pages in September 2026. Kerbside collection covers 'most residences', not every property. The 2026–27 kerbside charges (for example $532 a year for a 140-litre rubbish, recycling and FOGO service) are on the Rates & fees page. Towong is part of Halve Waste, a regional program with Albury, Wodonga, Federation, Greater Hume, Indigo and Alpine councils.
