Waste & recycling

When your bins go out, and how Tenterfield Shire handles rubbish and recycling across Tenterfield town, Jennings, Urbenville, Drake, Legume, Liston, Torrington and Mingoola. Kerbside collection here is a two-bin service — there is no green-lidded FOGO bin. Your red general-waste bin is collected weekly on a day set by where you live (Tenterfield east of Rouse Street on Tuesdays, west of Rouse Street on Thursdays, the CBD on Tuesdays or Thursdays depending on side, Jennings and Millers Lane on Fridays, and Urbenville / Mount Lindesay Road on Wednesdays). Yellow recycling is collected fortnightly, on its own day rather than on your rubbish day, and is not offered at all on the Urbenville / Mount Lindesay run. Because the shire is large and mostly rural, a lot of waste here goes to the six village transfer stations rather than to a kerbside truck — and every annual rates notice comes with three free waste vouchers to use at them.

General waste (red lid)
WeeklyDay depends on your area: Tenterfield eastern side (and CBD eastern side) Tuesdays; Tenterfield western side (and CBD western side) Thursdays; Jennings and Millers Lane Fridays; Urbenville / Mount Lindesay Road Wednesdays. Put the bin out the evening before.
Recycling (yellow lid)
Fortnightly — on a different day to your rubbish binThe council's Waste Recycling Collection Calendar sets three fortnightly recycling runs: Jennings and Tenterfield western side, Millers Lane and Tenterfield eastern side, and the Tenterfield CBD. There is no recycling collection on the Urbenville / Mount Lindesay Road run. The recycling collection charge is billed separately from the waste charge ($98.50 a year, 2026–27).
Food & garden organics (green lid)
Not offered — no FOGO/green bin serviceTenterfield Shire runs a two-bin kerbside service. Green waste can be taken to a waste transfer station (charged by load or per tonne), and the council sells a Megamuncher worm farm / compost bin ($320, 2026–27) for home composting.
Bulky / hard waste
No kerbside cleanup — but 3 free waste vouchers come with each annual rates noticeOutside the vouchers, self-hauled loads are charged at the transfer-station gate (e.g. car boot / station wagon $23.50, small box trailer $35.50, single mattress $36.50, per tonne $194.00 — 2026–27 fees). Loads over 4 tonnes must go to the Boonoo Boonoo landfill by appointment with 48 hours' notice.
Problem waste & drop-off
Community Recycling Centre, plus six village transfer stationsThe Community Recycling Centre takes household problem waste (paint, lead-acid batteries, fluorescent tubes and globes, gas bottles, oils) free of charge under the NSW EPA's Waste Less, Recycle More program. DrumMuster runs year-round for triple-rinsed chemical drums, and used engine oil is free at designated areas. Transfer stations operate at Tenterfield, Drake, Urbenville, Legume, Liston and Torrington.

Kerbside collection covers the Tenterfield township, Jennings, Millers Lane and the Urbenville / Mount Lindesay Road run; much of the rural shire relies on the transfer stations instead. The Tenterfield Waste Transfer Station is at 121 Sunnyside Loop Road, Tenterfield ((02) 6736 4720), open Monday and Wednesday to Sunday (closed Tuesdays), 10.00am–12 noon and 2.00–5.00pm in winter (3.00–6.00pm in daylight saving), and closed Christmas Day, Anzac Day and Good Friday. Bin frequencies, station hours and gate fees can change — confirm on the official sources below.
