Elections & voting
NSW holds local government elections every four years. Voting is compulsory for enrolled residents, so it's worth knowing the date and keeping your enrolment up to date — and in Tenterfield, which ward you live in, because you only vote for the two councillors representing your ward.

- Ward
- A subdivision of a council area that elects its own councillors.
- How the mayor is chosen
- Either elected directly by voters, or chosen by the councillors.
- Special Rate Variation (SRV)
- Permission for a council to raise rates by more than the peg.

- Runs council elections and publishes the official results.

- Five wards (A, B, C, D, E); 2 councillors per ward by proportional representationAbout 4,975 electors were enrolled across the five wards at the 2024 election (Ward A 1,015; Ward B 1,031; Ward C 984; Ward D 968; Ward E 977). Ward B was uncontested — only two candidates nominated, so both were declared elected on election day without a vote. The ten councillors then elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor from among themselves.
