Oberon's kerbside service is smaller than most councils' and worth understanding before you put a bin out. Council contracts a weekly collection of one 240-litre red-lidded residual-waste bin to about 1,250 properties inside the Oberon town limits, plus the Stratford Downs subdivision — bins go out early Wednesday for addresses west of Dudley Street and early Friday for addresses east of Dudley Street. There is no kerbside recycling bin and no green FOGO bin anywhere in the LGA: recycling is a drop-off service at the Oberon Waste Depot and Recycling Centre on Lowes Mount Road. Households in Black Springs, Burraga, O'Connell, Edith, Hazelgrove and the rural areas are outside the collection contract altogether and either self-haul to the depot and the two village transfer stations or arrange a private bin service. Council's Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2026–2036, adopted in March 2026, sets out how those services are planned to change over the next decade.

Bin collection at a glance

General waste (red lid): Weekly, 240-litre bin — Oberon town limits and Stratford Downs onlyAbout 1,250 properties are on the contract, collected early Wednesday (west of Dudley Street) and early Friday (east of Dudley Street). Litter bins across the LGA and the Hassell Park, Flat Rock and The Reef campgrounds are serviced under the same contract, held by local contractor Oberon Trash-Pak (current term 1 February 2025 to 31 January 2027).
Recycling (yellow lid): Not offered as a kerbside service — drop-off onlyCo-mingled recyclables (glass bottles, aluminium cans, plastic bottles, paper and cardboard) are accepted free at the Oberon Waste Depot and Recycling Centre. Council's 2026 waste strategy records that of the councils it compared itself with, Oberon is the only one that does not provide a kerbside recycling service, and that its community consultation showed general support for introducing one.
: Not offeredThere is no kerbside organics collection. Garden organics can be dropped at the Oberon Waste Depot (a charge applies). The NSW Government has mandated that councils provide a FOGO service to every household that receives a red-lid collection by 1 July 2030; Council's Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2026–2036 is the document that sets out how it plans to get there.
Bulky / hard waste: No kerbside collection — four $10 tip vouchers per residential assessment each yearCouncil does not run a bulky-goods kerbside service. Instead each residential assessment receives four vouchers a year, each worth $10, usable for domestic waste at Council's waste facilities. In Council's first community waste survey close to 70% of respondents said they preferred vouchers to a bookable bulky-goods collection.
Problem waste & drop-off: Oberon Waste Depot and Recycling Centre, 362 Lowes Mount Road (about 3.7 km north of town)Includes a Community Recycling Centre for household problem waste, an oil recycling facility, drumMUSTER, scrap metal and free e-waste drop-off. Smaller transfer stations at Black Springs and Burraga take residual waste, non-bulky green waste and scrap metal on set part-days. From 2026–27 the depot charges by weight through a new weighbridge, with load-based volumetric pricing kept for smaller or mixed domestic loads and at the two transfer stations.

Kerbside collection is limited to the Oberon town limits and the Stratford Downs subdivision — most of the LGA has no council bin service at all. Waste depot public-holiday closures, gate fees and voucher arrangements change year to year, so confirm current details on the official sources below before you drive out.
