Narrandera sits on the Murrumbidgee River in the geographical centre of the Riverina, where the Newell and Sturt Highways cross — which is why the town has long been a stopping point for road freight and travellers. It is a large, sparsely populated shire: about 4,116 km² with over 1,500 kilometres of roads, taking in the villages of Barellan, Grong Grong, Binya and a string of smaller rural localities. Leeton and Griffith are the nearest larger centres.

Council operates the Narrandera-Leeton Airport and the Red Hill Industrial Estate. Barellan is the home town of tennis champion Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

The present shire was formed on 1 January 1960 by amalgamating the Narrandera Municipality with Yanko Shire. Narrandera Shire Council acknowledges the Wiradjuri/Wiradyuri People as the traditional custodians of the land and waters of the area.
