Waste & recycling

Moyne's kerbside collection runs in certain townships and along set collection routes; not every address is eligible. Where it runs, households have four bins: a red-lid landfill bin collected weekly, a yellow-lid recycling bin and a green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin collected on alternate fortnights, and a purple-lid glass-only bin collected every four weeks. Everyone else uses the council's eight waste facilities.

Bin collection at a glance

Landfill (red lid)
Weekly, 120-litre binGeneral household waste, bagged so it doesn't blow out. The council says rubbish is collected weekly, even on public holidays. Not food waste, glass, recyclables, e-waste, batteries, chemicals, building material or hot ashes.
Recycling (yellow lid)
Fortnightly, 240-litre binPlastic bottles and containers (the council's page lists plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5 in one place and 1 and 2 in another — check with the council if unsure), steel and aluminium cans, clean foil, empty aerosols, paper and cardboard. Loose, not bagged. No glass, lids, soft plastics, polystyrene or waxed cardboard.
Food & garden organics (green lid)
Fortnightly, 240-litre bin, on the week you don't have recyclingFood scraps (including meat, fish, dairy and dog droppings), grass, leaves, small branches, coffee grounds and paper towels. Green compostable liners are accepted; no plastic bags. The council says it goes to a nearby commercial composting facility.
Glass only (purple lid)
Every four weeks, 120-litre binBottles and jars without lids, window glass and mirrors (no frames), Pyrex and glassware. No ceramics or car glass. The council says the glass is crushed at the old quarry in Illowa and used in road construction.

Waste facilities (tips)
Eight sites: Killarney, Mortlake, Macarthur, Peterborough, Woolsthorpe, Woorndoo, Caramut and HawkesdaleOpening hours differ by site — for example, Killarney (Badhams Lane) is open 10am–4pm every day, and Mortlake (Connewarren Lane) 1.30–4.30pm on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. All sites close on Good Friday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Fees apply: in 2026–27 a 240-litre wheelie bin or car-boot load of rubbish is $26, rubbish by the cubic metre $105, green waste $35 per cubic metre; scrap metal, batteries and oil are free.Sites, hours and fees →
E-waste
Any of the council's waste facilities (fees apply)Small items such as phones, discs and USBs can go to collection points at the Port Fairy council office and the Mortlake and Koroit libraries. E-waste has been banned from Victorian landfill since 1 July 2019.
Bulky / hard waste
No kerbside hard-waste collection foundThe council's waste pages (checked September 2026) describe no hard-waste collection; bulky items such as mattresses and fridges go to a waste facility at the listed fees. Inferred from the pages — check with the council.

Bin colours and frequencies are as the council describes them on its own pages in September 2026. The kerbside service is charged on the rates notice of properties that receive it: $460 in 2026–27, plus a $29 state waste levy — the council's waste help page gives the set of four bins as $489 a year, charged pro rata. Separately, every property pays a waste facility service charge ($111 for developed properties, $28 for others) towards the tips and closed-landfill rehabilitation — see Rates & fees.
