Waste & recycling

How the Shire's bins work today. Households on the kerbside service have a rubbish bin collected every week and a recycling bin collected every fortnight. The food and green waste bin is optional for now: you can order one if you live in the Peninsula's urban area, and it is collected fortnightly, in the opposite week to recycling. Bins are collected on the same weekday all year, including public holidays. Use the Shire's address lookup to find your bin day.

Bin collection at a glance

Rubbish (landfill)
WeeklyThe standard bin is 80 litres. The Shire describes its lid as dark green, the 'old' colour; bins are moving to the new statewide colours as they are replaced. Larger bins cost extra. The Shire says there are no plans to move rubbish to fortnightly collection.
Recycling
Fortnightly (weekly from 21 Dec 2026 to 29 Jan 2027)Every household gets a 240-litre bin. The Shire calls the old lid colour light blue. Paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, food and drink cans, and food, drink and laundry plastic containers go in this bin, empty, rinsed and loose. Soft plastics, textiles and hard plastics such as toys and buckets don't.
Food and green waste (optional bin)
Fortnightly — $178 a year (2026–27)A 240-litre bin for food scraps and garden waste, available in the urban area. The Shire says 54,000 households already use it. It plans to give one to every household without one in 2027, and from 1 July 2027 the bin will be included in the total waste charge; the Shire hasn't published that price yet.Order a food and green waste bin →
Glass
No separate glass bin — glass goes in recyclingVictorian law requires councils to offer a separate glass service by 2027, as a kerbside bin or a drop-off. The Shire says glass bins 'will NOT be introduced yet'. It is advocating with more than 30 other Victorian councils against a separate glass bin, and argues for expanding the Container Deposit Scheme instead. Booked hard and green waste
Book by phone: (03) 5950 1406Collected from your nature strip. The cost depends on volume and type, quoted when you book. Owners can pay with the 4 waste vouchers on each rates notice (1 voucher = half a cubic metre); tenants can apply for tenant waste vouchers, or you can pay by card. Items over 30 kg or longer than 1.5 m, chemicals, asbestos, building rubble and tyres are not accepted.Booked waste service →
Tips (resource recovery centres)
Mornington (134 Watt Road), Tyabb (21 McKirdys Road), Rye landfill (280 Truemans Road, Fingal)Open Mon–Fri 8am–4pm, weekends and public holidays 8am–5pm; closed Christmas Day and Good Friday. Fees apply; some items, including gas bottles, vapes and batteries, are free to drop off. There are also fee-paying hoppers at Dromana, Sorrento and Flinders. The lid colours above are the Shire's own description of its older bins. Under the new statewide standard, general rubbish is red, recycling yellow, food and garden waste lime green and glass purple. The Shire says it is replacing old lids on request, when a bin is damaged, and fitting new colours to new bins. It hasn't set a date for replacing the rest. Collection frequencies and charges can change, so check the Shire's pages below.
