Most households have a red-lid garbage bin and a yellow-lid recycling bin. In the towns, the garbage bin is a 120-litre bin collected weekly; in rural areas it is a 240-litre bin collected fortnightly. Households in Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Maddingley, Hopetoun Park and Ballan township can also have a fortnightly green waste bin. Some parts of the shire are compulsory garbage service areas; in others you can choose to opt in. From 1 July 2027, the green waste bin in the urban areas and Gordon becomes a food and garden organics (FOGO) bin.

Food and garden organics (FOGO): Starts 1 July 2027 — mandatory in urban areas and GordonUrban areas (Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Hopetoun Park, Maddingley, Ballan township) get fortnightly FOGO in the opposite week to recycling, with garbage staying weekly. Gordon township gets fortnightly FOGO, garbage and recycling, with days to be confirmed. Bins and a kitchen caddy are delivered April–June 2027; existing green waste bins take food scraps from 1 July 2027. You can't opt out. Hard waste: No kerbside collection — 2 m³ free at a transfer station each rating yearFor residential properties on the 'General' differential rate: bring your rates notice. Transfer stations: Ballan (118 Monteville Lane), Maddingley (51 Osborne Street), Mount Egerton (947 Ballan-Egerton Road)Ballan 1pm–5pm Wednesday to Monday; Maddingley 10am–4pm Friday to Monday; Mount Egerton 12pm–5pm Saturday and Sunday. The lid colours, bin sizes and frequencies above are as the council lists them. The council's collection contractor is JJ Richards. Residents outside the collection areas can buy one sheet of 26 transfer station vouchers a year ($107 in 2026–27). Paint and chemicals aren't accepted at Moorabool's transfer stations; the council points to Sustainability Victoria's Detox your Home program and, for paint, the Melton and Ballarat transfer stations (call ahead).
