Elections & voting
Victorian council elections are held every four years, and all voting is by post. The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) mails a ballot pack to every enrolled voter. Voting is compulsory for people on the state roll, and you may be fined if you don't vote. Mitchell elects 3 councillors in each of its 3 wards.

- 3 wards (North, Central, South), 3 councillors each; proportional representationA candidate needs a quota of the formal votes in their ward to be elected: 2,440 in Central, 2,366 in North and 2,455 in South in 2024. The Mayor is chosen by the councillors, not by voters.

- CountbackIn a multi-councillor ward, the VEC fills a vacancy by recounting the votes from the last election among the unsuccessful candidates who choose to take part. There has been none in Mitchell since 2024.
