Waste & recycling

How Maribyrnong's bins work today. General rubbish is collected every week. Recycling and food and garden organics are collected fortnightly, on alternate weeks. Glass bottles and jars still go in the recycling bin. The bin colours below are the council's own description. Use the council's 2026 bin calendar or its Bins and Recycling app to find your collection days.

Bin collection at a glance

General rubbish (red lid)
WeeklyGoes to landfill. For soft plastics and plastic bags, nappies, broken glassware and crockery, used paper towel and similar items. No batteries, e-waste or hazardous waste. The council says it has replaced the old dark-green general rubbish lids with red ones.What goes in →
Recycling (yellow lid)
FortnightlyLoose, not bagged: clean paper and cardboard, steel and aluminium tins and cans, plastic containers numbered 1, 2 and 5, and empty glass jars and bottles. No soft plastics, coffee cups, textiles or food.What goes in →
Food and garden organics (green lid)
Fortnightly — on the week recycling isn't collectedFor stand-alone houses and developments of up to 4 units. Apartment buildings and developments of 5 or more units don't have the service yet; the council plans to extend it to them in July 2028. Any food, including meat, bones and seafood, plus garden waste, placed loose. No plastic or 'compostable' bags. A smaller 120-litre bin is available on request.About the FOGO bin →
Glass (purple lid)
Not yet — the council hasn't decided on a separate glass serviceState law requires four bins, including a purple-lid glass bin. The council says it will decide on a glass service after the Victorian Government releases the final Service Standards. Hard rubbish and green waste
1 free booked collection per eligible household each calendar yearChoose one option per booking: up to 2 m³ of hard rubbish, up to 4 m³ of bundled green waste, or 2 mattresses or bed bases. Place it inside your property near the front boundary. Extra collections cost $104.70. Cancel by 2pm on the Friday before your collection or the free booking is forfeited. Buildings with more than 10 dwellings arrange collections through the owners corporation or building manager.Book hard rubbish →
Drop-off
Free Community Recycling Stations at six council sitesFor small electrical items (including vapes), light globes, CDs and DVDs, X-rays, pens and stationery. Braybrook Community Hub, Yarraville Library, Maribyrnong Community Centre, Maidstone Community Centre, West Footscray Library and RecWest Braybrook, during each site's opening hours. Batteries are not accepted there; larger e-waste goes to a transfer station. The council does not run its own transfer station and lists nearby ones on its e-waste page.Recycling stations →
