Waste & recycling

Households on the council's kerbside service have four bins. The food and garden organics (FOGO) bin is collected every week. The recycling and rubbish bins are collected in alternate weeks, and the glass-only bin every four weeks. The council introduced the four-bin service in the main townships in February 2020 and across the rest of the shire in July 2021. Put your bins out the night before collection day.

Bin collection at a glance

Food and garden organics (FOGO)
Weekly — lime-green lid (240 L)All food scraps, including meat, bones and dairy, and garden waste. The council supplies a kitchen caddy and bin liners.About FOGO →
Recycling
Fortnightly — yellow lid (240 L)No glass in this bin. Glass goes in the purple-lid bin. Collected in the opposite week to your rubbish bin.What goes in recycling →
Glass only
Every four weeks — purple lid (140 L)Bottles and jars, lids off, not bagged. Drinking glasses, window glass, mirrors, light globes, ceramics and Pyrex don't go in. Every property with a recycling bin must have a glass bin; you can't opt out.Glass-only bins →
Rubbish (general waste)
Fortnightly — red lid (140 L)Some older bins have a dark green lid. You can upgrade to a 240-litre bin for an extra $227 a year. Some households can get a larger bin at no extra cost on medical grounds (see Rates & fees).Rubbish bins →
Hard rubbish
No kerbside hard rubbish collectionThe council says a hard rubbish service isn't currently viable because of cost and distances in the shire, and it doesn't issue hard-waste tip vouchers. Take hard waste to a resource recovery facility (fees apply) or donate usable items.Hard rubbish →
Free green waste
Two free trailer loads a year for each rated propertyEach voucher covers a 6 × 4 × 1 m trailer of accepted green waste. From September 2026 the vouchers are in the LoopedIn Councils app or can be printed from the council website; this year's are valid until 30 June 2027. Bring photo ID. Resource recovery facilities (tips)
Kyneton (140 Redesdale Rd), Romsey (21 Johnston Ct), Woodend (149 Quarry Rd)Open 10am–4pm on set days: Kyneton Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun; Romsey Tue, Fri, Sat, Sun; Woodend every day except Tuesday. Find your bin day

The lid colours and frequencies above are as the council lists them. The kerbside charge on your rates notice pays for the four-bin service (see Rates & fees). The council's app moved to LoopedIn Councils in September 2026; the council asks residents to delete its previous waste app.
