Waste & recycling
How Latrobe City's bins work. Households on the collection route have three bins: a general rubbish bin (red lid) collected every week, and a recycling bin and a food and garden organics (FOGO) bin, collected on alternate weeks on the same day as your rubbish. Since 1 July 2026 food scraps go in the lime-green lid bin instead of the rubbish bin. Once a year the council runs a free kerbside hard waste collection, town by town. Use the Neighbourhood Navigator map or the waste calendar to find your collection day.

- Fortnightly, alternating with recycling — food scraps added from 1 July 2026All food scraps, including meat, small bones, dairy and citrus, plus grass clippings, leaves, prunings and small timber off-cuts. Not accepted: pet waste, tea bags and coffee pods, compostable or plastic bags and packaging, soil and rocks, treated timber, branches over 10 cm wide and noxious weeds. The council says the material goes to Pinegro's composting facility in Morwell. Rural properties on the collection route over 4 hectares are exempt. We describe the bins the way the council does: in Latrobe City, recycling bins have a dark-green or yellow lid, so check what a bin is for rather than going by colour. The council's website doesn't accept automated requests from us, so several of these pages were read from archived copies (dates in the sources). Services, hours and fees change, so check the council's pages before you go.
