Waste & recycling

When your bins go out, and how Lane Cove Council handles recycling and bulky waste. The council runs a kerbside service with a red-lid general-waste bin, a yellow-lid recycling bin and a green-lid garden-organics bin. From 2026 the council is adding a separate weekly food-waste service: from February 2026 stand-alone houses receive a maroon-lid food-waste bin, a kitchen caddy and compostable liners, and weekly food-waste collections begin on 16 March 2026. Townhouses, units and apartments can opt in from 2027. Lane Cove keeps food and garden waste in separate streams — it is not a combined food-and-garden (FOGO) bin — because its garden-organics bin is processed into compost that the council says food scraps would contaminate. To find your collection day, use the council's waste collection calendar.

Lane Cove keeps garden organics and food waste in separate streams (not a single combined FOGO bin); the NSW-wide food-organics requirement is being met here via a dedicated weekly food-waste bin rolling out from 2026.
