The council's stated direction
Lachlan Shire's direction is set out in its Community Strategic Plan 2025–2035 and a four-year Delivery Program with an annual Operational Plan and budget — most recently the 2027–2030 Delivery Program including the 2026–27 Operational Plan and Budget, adopted in July 2026 with $58 million to spend, $24.5 million of it on capital works.
Council states its vision as 'the Lachlan Shire to be a resilient community providing economic and social growth, through evolving agricultural, business, and mineral activities', and its mission as engaging the community and delivering accessible, progressive services under a long-term strategic plan. It manages local roads (about 4,000 km), water and sewer, waste, parks, libraries, children's services, home and community care, and planning across a shire of nearly 15,000 km² whose economy is anchored in grain, sheep, wool and beef, with light manufacturing at Condobolin and Lake Cargelligo.
The adopted 2026–27 budget totals $58 million, supported by $24.9 million in Commonwealth and NSW Government grants, and includes $24.5 million for capital improvements — among them $9 million of grant-funded roads works, $2.4 million for sporting grounds, pools and recreational facilities, $1.3 million for visitor-experience initiatives, $800,000 for the McInnes Street Lake Cargelligo land development, $740,000 for Home and Community Care, and $260,000 for community grants and events. Grants and contributions were $26.7 million of council's $50.9 million total income in 2024–25, so grant funding is a large part of what the council can do in any year.

2026–27 budget: $58 million, $24.5 million of it capital
Adopted July 2026; delivery through 2026–27Council adopted a $58 million budget for 2026–27, supported by $24.9 million in Commonwealth and NSW Government grants. It includes $24.5 million for capital improvements, of which $9 million is grant-funded roads work across the shire, plus $2.4 million for sporting grounds, swimming pools and recreational facilities, $1.3 million for visitor-experience initiatives, $800,000 towards the McInnes Street Lake Cargelligo land development, $740,000 for Home and Community Care and $260,000 for community grants and events including shire-wide ANZAC Day and Australia Day commemorations.

Lachlan Active Transport Plan
Funded under the NSW Get Active Program; community engagement ongoingCouncil received NSW Get Active Program funding to prepare a new Active Transport Plan replacing the Lachlan Active Travel Plan 2016, most of whose projects council says are now complete. Prepared with consultants Currajong and GHD, the plan sets out the next program of walking and cycling facility improvements across the shire; council has invited community involvement through its Have Your Say page.

Development Application Support Service
Launched July 2026; by appointment, ongoingWith all development applications now required to be lodged through the NSW Planning Portal, council introduced a free one-on-one support service to help residents lodge online — checking that documentation is uploaded correctly and the application is submitted properly. It is available by appointment at council's Condobolin and Lake Cargelligo offices, arranged through the Environment and Planning Department on (02) 6895 1900.
