The council's stated direction

Inner West Council's direction is set out in 'Our Inner West 2041' (its Community Strategic Plan), a Delivery Program 2025–2029 (year 2) and Operational Plan & Budget 2026/27, adopted by Council on 16 June 2026.

SustainabilityCreativityLiveability & wellbeingInclusive civic leadership

The council groups its long-term priorities as sustainability, creativity, liveability, wellbeing and inclusive civic leadership. It runs local roads, waste (including a full FOGO service), libraries, parks and aquatic facilities, planning and community services across the former Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville areas.

The 2026/27 budget keeps rates within the standard IPART peg (no special rate variation), builds in nearly $5 million of savings through a Financially Sustainable Service Delivery program, and directs capital works toward reducing the infrastructure repair backlog — after $50.4M of asset renewals were delivered in 2024–25.
