Waste & recycling
Residential properties in Hindmarsh's towns have a compulsory three-bin service: a red-lid 120-litre rubbish bin collected weekly, a yellow-lid 240-litre recycling bin collected fortnightly, and a purple-lid 120-litre glass bin collected every twelve weeks. Collections are contracted to Wimmera Mallee Waste. Most rural properties have no kerbside recycling; some rural roads have an on-route rubbish collection, and there are glass and recycling drop-off points in several small towns. A food and garden organics (FOGO) bin is due to start on or before 1 July 2027.

- Glass (purple lid)
- Every 12 weeks, 120-litre bin — next collection Friday 18 December 2026Remaining published dates: Friday 18 December 2026 and Friday 12 March 2027. The council moved from 8-weekly to 12-weekly collection after a bin audit found about 1 in 5 households put the glass bin out. - Food & garden organics (FOGO)
- Coming: fortnightly FOGO bin, with rubbish staying weekly, from on or before 1 July 2027On 4 February 2026 the council unanimously chose this option, which 57.9% of 145 survey respondents preferred. The state requires all councils to offer the four-bin system by 1 July 2027. New green-lid bins and rollout details are still to be announced; the council is seeking expressions of interest for an organics processing facility at the Dimboola Transfer Station (closing 22 October 2026). Recycling and glass collections stay as they are.

- Hard waste
- No kerbside hard rubbish collectionThe council asks residents to take hard waste to the nearest transfer station. Furniture is charged per item ($12 small, $42 medium, $116 large in 2026–27); mattresses $54.
- Free green waste in October
- 1–31 October 2026, at all council transfer stationsFor Hindmarsh residents, and Hindmarsh-based businesses providing services to residents, ahead of the fire season. The council's budget describes one free green-waste month a year.
- Transfer stations
- Nhill, Dimboola, Jeparit and RainbowMarch–November hours — Nhill: Mon, Wed, Fri 2–5pm, Sat 9.30am–12.30pm, Sun 1–4pm. Dimboola: Mon 1.30–4.30pm, Wed 9.30am–12.30pm, Fri 1.30–4.30pm, Sat 10am–1pm, Sun 12.30–3.30pm. Jeparit: Tue 10am–1pm, Thu 2–5pm, Sun 10.30am–1.30pm. Rainbow: Mon 1–4pm, Fri 2–5pm, Sun 9am–12pm. In December–February and on Total Fire Ban days all sites open 9am–12 noon on their usual days; all close on Catastrophic fire danger days, Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. - E-waste
- Drop off at any council transfer station ($2 per kg)E-waste has been banned from Victorian landfill since 1 July 2019 and can't go in any bin. Old mobile phones and chargers can go to the MobileMuster point at the Nhill customer service office.
- Missed, damaged or stolen bin

Bin colours, sizes and frequencies are as the council describes them on its own pages in September 2026. The council's Glass Bins page still includes an older answer saying no FOGO service is planned; the February 2026 council decision above replaces it.
