Gwydir Shire is an undivided (at-large) council: its nine councillors are elected across the whole local government area by proportional representation, rather than by ward. The councillors elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor from among themselves — Gwydir does not have a popularly elected mayor, and the NSW Electoral Commission ran no mayoral contest here in 2024. Cr Tiffany Galvin was elected Mayor and Cr Sean Coleman Deputy Mayor in October 2024. One seat changed hands mid-term: Cr Marilyn 'Mash' Dixon OAM resigned on medical grounds effective 3 February 2026 after four terms, and the vacancy was filled by a countback of the 2024 ballot papers rather than a fresh vote, with Cr Ravi Gill of Warialda declared elected in March 2026. Cr Ravi Gill (Warialda), declared March 2026Filled the seat vacated by Cr Marilyn 'Mash' Dixon OAM, who resigned effective 3 February 2026. A countback re-uses the ballot papers from the 2024 election, so no by-election was held; only unelected 2024 candidates were eligible.

We list who's in office and link to their official profiles and the election results; we don't characterise anyone's politics. Party labels are those each councillor was elected under at the September 2024 election (NSW Electoral Commission) — only John Bishton and Adrian Willmot were declared with an Independent (IND) group code; the NSWEC results show no group code for the other elected candidates, so their affiliation is left blank here rather than guessed. Cr Ravi Gill took his seat by casual-vacancy countback in March 2026, with no group code, so his affiliation is also left blank. Casual vacancies can change the makeup, so the council's official page has the most current list — note that when we checked in August 2026 the Meet the Councillors page still listed eight councillors and had not yet added Cr Gill, whereas the council's own Operational Plan 2026/2027 lists all nine.
