How Greater Shepparton's bins work today. Households in the urban areas have four bins: a red-lid bin for general waste and a yellow-lid bin for recycling, collected in alternate fortnights; a green-lid bin for food and garden organics, collected every week; and a purple-lid bin for glass, collected every four weeks. The service is compulsory in urban areas and optional in rural areas. There is no kerbside hard waste collection yet; the council aims to start one in 2027/28. Bin collection at a glance

General waste (red lid): Fortnightly — 80, 120 or 240 litresFor waste that can't be reused, recycled or composted, such as soft plastics, polystyrene, broken window or drinking glass, old fabric and nappies. The contents go to Cosgrove Landfill without further sorting. Bins over 100 kg aren't collected. Larger bins cost more on your rates, and upsizing carries a $68 administration fee.What goes in the red-lid bin →
Recycling (yellow lid): Fortnightly, alternating with the red-lid bin — 240 or 360 litresPaper and cardboard, milk and juice cartons, aluminium and steel cans, and plastics numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7. Not soft plastics, polystyrene, light globes, batteries, clothing or electronics. Glass bottles and jars go in the purple-lid bin instead.What goes in the recycling bin →
Food and garden organics (green lid): Weekly — 240 litresAll food scraps (including meat, bones, seafood and dairy), tea bags and coffee grounds, tissues and paper towel, lawn clippings, prunings and branches under 10 cm thick. Not paper, cardboard, plastics, soil, nappies or kitty litter. The council lists the green-lid bin for Shepparton, Arcadia, Congupna, Dookie, Grahamvale, Katandra West, Kialla, Kialla West, Merrigum, Mooroopna, Murchison, Murchison East, Orrvale, Tallygaroopna, Tatura, Toolamba and Undera, with a free kitchen caddy and a roll of 150 green compostable liner bags, which the council says is likely to last 12 months.What goes in the green-lid bin →
Glass (purple lid): Every four weeks — 120 litresEmpty glass bottles and jars; labels can stay on. Not drinking glasses, mirrors, window glass, crockery or perfume bottles, which go in the red-lid bin. The purple bin is a required part of the service for residential properties and optional for others.What goes in the glass bin →
Hard waste: No kerbside hard waste collection yet — targeted for 2027/28In May 2026 the council said its tender for a hard waste collection service was formally abandoned because the outcome didn't meet competitive tendering requirements. At its June 2026 meeting it endorsed a new tender process, with the service to begin in the 2027/28 financial year. Resource recovery centres: Shepparton, Ardmona and MurchisonShepparton's centre is at 125 Wanganui Road, open Monday to Saturday 8am–4.15pm and Sundays and public holidays 9am–4.15pm; all centres close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Anzac Day and Good Friday. Many items are free, including household recyclables, batteries, e-waste items and washing machines; others are charged. Card (EFTPOS) only, no cash.
