Waste & recycling

When your bins go out, and how Greater Hume handles recycling and waste across its towns and villages. In 2024 the council moved to a three-bin kerbside system (red general waste, yellow recycling, green food-and-garden organics/FOGO), ahead of the NSW-wide 2030 FOGO mandate. Bins alternate: your organics bin goes out every week, while your recycling and general-waste bins alternate with each other fortnightly. To find your exact collection day, use the council's waste pages or the regional Halve Waste site below.

General waste (red lid)
FortnightlyCollected on alternate weeks to your recycling day (i.e. red and yellow bins alternate week-to-week). Moved from weekly to fortnightly with the 2024 three-bin rollout.
Recycling (yellow lid)
FortnightlyCollected on alternate weeks to your general-waste day.
Weekly (green lid)Introduced across the LGA from 1 July 2024 — collected on the same day every week. Part-funded via the NSW EPA's regional FOGO grants program through the Riverina & Murray Joint Organisation.
Bulky / hard waste
Self-haul to a waste facility (no confirmed kerbside pick-up)We found no publicly documented kerbside bulky-waste collection. The council instead operates waste transfer facilities across the shire — 3m³ skip bins at Culcairn, Holbrook and Jindera, and smaller domestic drop-off at Burrumbuttock, Gerogery, Henty and Mullengandra. Confirm current arrangements and any charges with the council.
Problem waste & drop-off
Council waste facilities; periodic Chemical Collection daysHousehold chemicals, paints and similar hazardous items are not accepted in bins — free drop-off is available at council waste facilities, plus periodic Chemical Collection days and DrumMUSTER for eligible chemical drums.
