Waste & recycling

How Gannawarra's household bins work. The council runs a weekly household waste collection (red-lid bin) and a fortnightly mixed recycling collection (yellow-lid bin) to most properties across the shire; Veolia empties the bins under contract. Glass bottles and jars go in the yellow recycling bin — there is no separate glass bin. Urban residents of Cohuna, Kerang and Koondrook can also opt in to a fortnightly green waste bin. There is no food and garden organics (FOGO) bin.

Household waste (red lid)
WeeklyHousehold waste, meat, fish and food scraps, plastic bags and soft plastics, polystyrene, nappies, broken glassware and crockery, and bagged lawn clippings or garden waste. Not accepted: syringes, gas bottles, oil, paint or solvents, soil and rocks, building materials including asbestos, chemicals and hot ashes. Green waste (opt-in)
Fortnightly, for Cohuna, Kerang and Koondrook urban residents — $99 a year (2026–27)Collected on the collection day when your yellow bin isn't emptied. Grass clippings, leaves, prunings, weeds and small branches (no thicker than 15 cm or longer than 60 cm). Apply with the council's waste form or at the Kerang or Cohuna office; the charge is added to your rates notice. This is a garden-only bin, not food and garden organics.Green waste service →

By area and weekday on the council's kerbside pageCollection days depend on where you live (Monday to Friday by township and rural area), and the page lists each area's 2026 recycling dates. Put your bin out the night before, with the wheels furthest from the road; in rural areas at least 1 metre back from the edge of the seal. Transfer stations
Cohuna, Kerang, Lalbert and QuambatookCohuna (Chuggs Road): Fridays 9am–11am, Sundays 1pm–4pm. Kerang (Kerang-Murrabit Road): Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays 1pm–4pm. Lalbert (Wood Avenue): 1st and 3rd Sundays, 10am–12 noon. Quambatook (Meering Road): 1st and 3rd Sundays, 1pm–3pm. All close on public holidays. Transfer station fees (2026–27)
Household waste $44 per m³; green waste $14 per m³; mattress $44Free: household glass, cans, plastic bottles, paper and cardboard, e-waste, and degassed fridges and whitegoods. A 120-litre bin load is $8.50 and a 240-litre bin load $16.50. Solar panels are taken free for recycling. Asbestos isn't accepted at any council transfer station.Fees →

We describe the bins the way the council does. The council's pages don't mention a food and garden organics (FOGO) bin or a separate glass bin; under the state's recycling reforms every council must offer glass and FOGO services, by 2027 and 2030 respectively. Bin charges are on the Rates & fees page; the transfer station fees match the council's 2026/27 fees and charges schedule.
