A quick snapshot of the Edward River local government area — the council that covers Deniliquin, the town most people in the district actually name. Edward River Council was constituted on 12 May 2016 by the Local Government (Council Amalgamations) Proclamation 2016, which amalgamated Deniliquin Council with the surrounding Conargo Shire; Deniliquin is the council seat and the only sizeable town. Almost all of the LGA is southern Riverina plain on the Edward River, and its economy runs on irrigated agriculture — rice, cereals and other cropping, plus sheep and cattle. Deniliquin is the historic home of the Peppin Merino and the site of SunRice's rice mill, and Council also runs the Deniliquin saleyards, airport, library, swim centre and the Peppin Heritage Centre and Visitor Information Centre.
