Mayor & councillors

Coonamble Shire is an undivided (at-large) council: its nine councillors are elected across the whole local government area by proportional representation, rather than by ward. The councillors elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor from among themselves (Coonamble does not have a popularly elected mayor). Councillors elected Cr Daniel Keady as Mayor at their first ordinary meeting on 9 October 2024 for a two-year term, and Cr Steven Butler as Deputy Mayor. Council also resolved to fill any casual vacancy arising within 18 months of the election by countback rather than a by-election. Council publishes a mobile number and an email address for every councillor.

How the Mayor is chosen

Council meetings
Second Wednesday of each month, 9am (no meeting in January)Held in the Council Chambers at 80 Castlereagh Street, Coonamble, except for one meeting a year at Gulargambone (March) and one at Quambone (August). Meetings are open to the public and webcast; business papers appear about a week beforehand. Members of the public can apply to speak for up to five minutes by lodging an Application to Speak by noon the day before.
