How Brimbank's bins work today. General rubbish is collected every week. Recycling and food and garden organics are collected fortnightly, on alternate weeks. The food and garden organics bin is optional and has its own annual fee. The bin colours below are the council's own description. Use the council's lookup to find your collection day.

Bin collection at a glance

General rubbish (red lid, or dark green on older bins)
WeeklyFor household rubbish, animal waste and plastics that can't be recycled. Wrap or bag rubbish first. The council is changing old dark-green lids to red.
Recycling (yellow lid)
FortnightlyPaper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, metal cans and tins, empty aerosol cans, and hard plastics numbered 1 to 5 (without lids).
Food and garden organics (bright green lid, optional)
Fortnightly — $103.30 a year (140 L) or $115.49 a year (240 L)An opt-in service with an annual fee. It is not part of the standard bin service. Food scraps, meat and bones, and garden clippings go in. Compostable bags, liners and packaging do not. Homeowners order the bin; renters need their landlord to order it. Once you have one, you must keep it for at least 12 months.About the FOGO bin →
Glass (purple lid)
Not yet — the council's 4-bin service is due to start on 1 July 2027Glass bottles and jars go in the yellow recycling bin for now. The council decided on its 4-bin model on 17 February 2026: weekly general rubbish, weekly food and garden organics for every household, fortnightly recycling and a new monthly glass bin. On 19 May 2026 the council endorsed a Notice of Motion from the Mayor. It asks for a report on the options for the glass bin, including whether it can be delayed, changed or not introduced, and calls for more State Government funding. Hard rubbish and green waste
1 free booked collection per financial yearUp to 4 m³ of hard rubbish and/or 2 m³ of green waste; book both together if you want both. Put items at the front property line. Drop-off
Brimbank Resource Recovery Centre, Stadium Drive, Keilor ParkMon–Fri 9am–4pm, Sat 9am–1pm, public holidays 9am–1pm (closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day). Free for Brimbank residents, household quantities only (one car boot per visit, no trailers). Accepts items such as batteries, e-waste, small appliances, polystyrene, soft plastics, clothing, gas bottles, paint tins, motor oil and clean paper and cardboard. Household rubbish, white goods, carpet, solar panels and most chemicals are not accepted.What's accepted →
