Waste & recycling

When your bin goes out, and how Bland Shire handles waste across West Wyalong, Wyalong, Ungarie, Barmedman, Weethalle and the surrounding villages. Council runs a single-bin kerbside service: one 240-litre general-waste bin (a 120-litre bin is an option) collected weekly from domestically occupied properties in West Wyalong, Wyalong, Ungarie, Barmedman and Weethalle. There is no kerbside recycling bin and no green food-and-garden-organics bin here — Council states that a kerbside recycling service is currently unviable, and instead points residents to Return and Earn, free cardboard and paper drop-off, and the Community Recycling Centre at the West Wyalong landfill. Your collection day depends on which town you live in, and in West Wyalong and Wyalong on which side of the Newell Highway you are on. Eight landfills are open across the shire for everything the bin does not take.

General waste (red lid)
WeeklyOne 240-litre bin per service (a 120-litre bin is an option). West Wyalong and Wyalong south of the Newell Highway: bin out Tuesday night for Wednesday. North of the Newell Highway: bin out Monday night for Tuesday. West Wyalong south of Showground Road: bin out Sunday for Monday. Barmedman: Tuesday night for Wednesday. Ungarie and Weethalle: Wednesday night for Thursday.
Recycling (yellow lid)
Not offered as a kerbside serviceCouncil states a kerbside recycling service is currently unviable and that it continues to investigate viable recycling options. Instead: eligible bottles and cans earn 10c at Return and Earn points at V & L Machinery, Railway Road, West Wyalong and the Ungarie Post Office, Wollongough Street, Ungarie; cardboard and paper are free at Kurrajong Waratah on Compton Road; and metal waste is free at the West Wyalong landfill.
Not offeredBland Shire has no green-lidded organics bin. Council asks that green waste be composted rather than placed in the bin, and sells compost bins and worm farms at a small fee.
Bulky / hard waste
No regular kerbside collection — periodic free tip days insteadCouncil periodically runs Free Tip Days, when residents and ratepayers can dispose of one free ute or trailer load of domestic waste at participating shire landfills (the most recent announced are 12-13 September 2026; conditions apply and some items are excluded). Outside those days, self-hauled loads are charged at the landfill gate fees in Council's adopted Schedule of Fees and Charges.

Community Recycling Centre, West Wyalong landfill, Racecourse RoadFree drop-off for e-waste (televisions, computers and peripherals), paint, batteries, fluorescent globes, oils, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and household quantities of some chemicals. Smaller collection points for household batteries, globes, smoke detectors and mobile phones are at Bernardi's supermarket and the West Wyalong IGA. Agricultural chemical drums go through DrumMUSTER (book on 6972 2266) and unwanted farm chemicals through ChemClear. Tyres and asbestos are accepted only at the West Wyalong landfill.

The domestic waste management charge is levied on domestically occupied properties in West Wyalong, Wyalong, Ungarie, Barmedman and Weethalle where the service is available; properties outside a serviced area pay a $45 annual waste management charge instead (2025-26 Revenue Policy). Eight landfills serve the shire: West Wyalong (Racecourse Road, off Park Street), Ungarie, Barmedman (89 Camp Street), Weethalle and Tallimba have set opening hours, while Mirrool, Naradhan and Kikoira are key-access for local residents (arrange a key on 6972 2266).
