Waste & recycling

How Bayside's bins work today. Every household on the council's kerbside service has a red-lid general waste bin and a blue-lid recycling bin, each collected fortnightly. The lid colours are Bayside's own description. The food and green waste bin is collected weekly, but it is optional: you pay a one-off charge to get one. Glass bottles and jars currently go in the recycling bin. Use the council's lookup to find your bin day.

Bin collection at a glance

General waste (red lid)
FortnightlyBayside is replacing its old dark-green general waste bins with black bins with red lids. If you still have a dark-green one, you can ask the council to take it away.
Recycling (blue lid)
FortnightlyGlass bottles and jars go in this bin (lids on), with cans, rigid plastics, paper and cardboard. Put items in loose, not bagged. Broken drinking or window glass goes in general waste.
Food and green waste (optional bin)
Weekly — $104.85 one-off charge to get a binA food organics and garden organics (FOGO) service. It is not added to your rates. Use compostable bags marked AS4736, or none at all. The council says 84% of residents now use the service.Order a food and green waste bin →
Glass (purple lid)
No separate glass bin in the 2026–27 collection calendarVictorian law requires councils to offer a separate glass service by 2027 and FOGO by 2030, either as a kerbside bin or at a drop-off point. The state's new lid colours are purple for glass, lime green for FOGO, yellow for mixed recycling and red for general rubbish. On the Bayside pages we could open, the council hasn't published a date for its glass service. A 'bin changes' page shows up in search results but refused our request (Sep 2026). We will re-check.
Hard waste
2 bookable collections per household per calendar yearFor homes on the council's kerbside bins. Bookings must be at least 6 weeks apart and are limited to 4 m³ (2 m × 2 m × 1 m). Put everything on the nature strip before you book; collection happens within 4 working days. Extra collections can be arranged at a cost with the contractor, Total Waste Solutions (9555 1970).Book hard waste →
Drop-off
Bayside Waste and Recycling Centre, 144 Talinga Road, CheltenhamRun by Future Recycling. Open Mon–Sat 8am–4pm; closed Sundays and public holidays. Household and car batteries, some e-waste, scrap metal and paint are free for Bayside residents. Fees apply to other items. Asbestos, chemicals and food waste are not accepted.What's accepted →

Bayside's recycling bin currently has a blue lid, not the yellow lid set under the new statewide standard. We describe the bins the way the council does. Frequencies and charges can change, so check the council's pages below.
