How Bass Coast's household bins work. Properties with the council's kerbside service have three bins: a red-lid general rubbish bin (120 litres as standard), a yellow-lid mixed recycling bin and a green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (both 240 litres). The FOGO bin is collected every week. The red and yellow bins are collected on alternate weeks, and recycling is collected weekly for a few weeks after Christmas. The shire is split into two collection zones, each with its own bin calendar. There is no separate kerbside glass bin: glass bottles and jars go in the recycling bin, or free at the council's waste facilities.

Bin collection at a glance

General rubbish (red lid): FortnightlyThe standard bin is 120 litres. You can upsize to 240 litres for $136.35 a year (2026–27); 240 litres is the maximum per property. Everything in this bin goes to the council's landfill at Grantville.Bins and calendars →
Mixed recycling (yellow lid): Fortnightly, on the other week — weekly in JanuaryPaper, cardboard (flattened), glass bottles and jars, aluminium and steel cans, rigid plastic containers and empty aerosols. Put items in loose, never bagged. No clothing or polystyrene. A second recycling bin costs $141.20 a year (2026–27). Food and garden organics — FOGO (green lid): WeeklyFood scraps (including meat, bones and dairy), lawn clippings, prunings and weeds, and branches under 10 cm wide and 40 cm long. Since April 2026 cardboard is no longer accepted — put it in the recycling bin. No treated wood, dog poo, kitty litter or tea bags. The 2026–27 bin calendar says to use only lime-green certified compostable (AS 4736) liners; free caddy liners are available from the council's customer service centres and visitor information centres. Find your bin day: Two zones — check your zone's bin calendarZone 1: Cape Woolamai, Wimbledon Heights, Ventnor, Newhaven, Rhyll, Smiths Beach, Sunderland Bay, Surf Beach, Sunset Strip, Bass, Grantville, Pioneer Bay, Jam Jerrup, The Gurdies, Lang Lang, Silverleaves and Cowes.
