Waste & recycling

How Banyule's household bins work today. Each household has three bins: a food and garden organics (FOGO) bin with a green lid, collected every week; a recycling bin with a yellow lid, collected every fortnight; and a rubbish bin with a red lid, also collected every fortnight. Glass bottles and jars go in the recycling bin. Use the council's address search to find which bins go out next.

Bin collection at a glance

Food and garden organics — FOGO (green lid)
WeeklyThe standard bin is 120 litres; a 240-litre bin is optional. Food scraps (including meat, bones and dairy), garden cuttings, grass and weeds go in. Bin liners (even compostable ones), food packaging, nappies, animal faeces and teabags don't. The council introduced the food and garden service on 4 July 2022.FOGO guide →
Recycling (yellow lid)
FortnightlyA 240-litre bin. Glass bottles and jars (metal caps on), hard plastic bottles and containers, aluminium and steel cans, and paper and cardboard. Items must be empty and loose, not in plastic bags. Soft plastics go in the rubbish bin.What goes in which bin →
Rubbish (red lid)
FortnightlyThe standard bin is 140 litres; a 240-litre bin costs extra on your rates notice. Only ratepayers can apply to change a bin size.
Glass
No separate glass bin yet — glass goes in recyclingThe council says the Victorian Government has mandated a fourth, glass-only bin from July 2027. Its 2026–27 budget includes $1.0 million for a 'Glass Service Rollout'. The council has also joined a group of 38 councils asking for the glass-only bin to be delayed, and for the Container Deposit Scheme to be expanded to wine and spirit bottles. Booked hard waste, mattress and branch collections
2 collection allocations a year per property on the waste serviceOne allocation covers a 1 m³ stack of hard waste, one mattress (with a single-piece base), or up to 12 bundled branches. Book online and check your remaining allocations with the property address.Book a collection →
Waste Recovery Centre (tip)
307–325 Waterdale Road, BellfieldRegular hours: weekdays 7.30am–3.30pm; weekends and public holidays 7.30am–12pm. Closed Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Anzac Day and Good Friday. Fees apply (card or EFT only). The council says the centre is being upgraded, that some waste such as rubble is no longer accepted, and asks you to check its list of changes before you go.Waste Recovery Centre →

Lid colours and frequencies above are the council's own description of its bins; they match the new statewide colours for rubbish (red), recycling (yellow) and food and garden waste (green). Fees at the Waste Recovery Centre are listed on two council pages that don't use the same format, so check the centre's page before you go.
